Causes of car engine not cooling

Cooling system failure

Some of the heat generated when the engine is running will be discharged into the environment by the radiator system. However, if the cooling fan has a problem, the hot air in the engine compartment cannot escape, leading to an increase in engine temperature. Sometimes, the thermostat is damaged, mineral deposits or foreign objects block the flow of fluid through the radiator, causing the heat dissipation process to be interrupted.

In addition, the fan does not work, which also reduces the cooling efficiency, causing the water to boil and the machine to overheat. When the pump is weak or the drive belt is poor, the water flow and pressure in the system do not meet the requirements, leading to the engine overheating.

When a car engine overheats, engine damage occurs very quickly, often within minutes.

Thermostat is stuck

The thermostat is an important part of the cooling system, responsible for regulating the amount of coolant to the engine components.

When the car engine temperature reaches a certain threshold, the thermostat will open to allow coolant to flow to the hot engine parts. If the thermostat is stuck, coolant will not be able to be distributed to the engine area for cooling, leading to overheating.

Coolant condensation

This phenomenon often occurs in winter, when the temperature drops too low, causing the coolant to condense. If you use poor quality coolants, they can solidify and cause blockages in the engine, causing the engine to overheat and easily damage the radiator.

Oil level too low

Engine oil acts as a coolant and prevents excessive heat buildup, removing 75% to 80% of excess heat from the engine. Engine oil also lubricates other parts of your car, reducing friction and preventing overheating. Insufficient engine coolant can cause fan failure.

Water pump broken

The water pump plays an important role in circulating the coolant. If the pump fails, the coolant cannot circulate to cool the engine, leading to overheating.

Cooling system leak

Air entering the cooling system can cause your car’s engine to overheat. Coolant can leak through holes, creating space for air to be sucked in. When air enters, it creates “bubbles” that block the coolant from reaching the engine, causing it to overheat.

Insufficient coolant levels in the engine can also cause fan failure.

How to handle when car engine overheats

Immediately after detecting that the engine is overheating, the driver needs to find a safe place to stop, pull over and turn on the emergency lights so that other vehicles can recognize the problem. After letting the car rest for about 10-15 minutes, the driver should open the hood to check the engine, check the radiator by opening it slightly, wait for the heat to escape and then open it completely. Absolutely do not open it immediately because boiling water in the radiator can easily splash onto your hands and cause burns.

If you find that the coolant level is insufficient, add more water to this part to continue operating. Every driver should prepare spare bottles of water in the car. However, using water is only a temporary solution. After going to the garage for repair or returning home, the car owner needs to wash the water tank and use specialized coolant to avoid dirt accumulation, causing damage to the cooling system.

To avoid unfortunate situations when driving, car owners need to pay attention to the temperature gauge. When there are signs of abnormality, turn off the engine, stop the car, open the hood to check. In case you cannot handle it yourself, you should call for help to ensure the safety of both the car owner and the car parts.
