Data shows that the demand for overseas travel (measured by the level of users searching on Google Search related to air tickets, accommodation) of Southeast Asian tourists exceeded 2019 levels in the most recent quarters.
Vietnam is the country with the highest growth rate. Specifically, in the second quarter of this year, the demand of Vietnamese people to go abroad increased by 163% compared to the same period in 2019; in the first quarter, it increased by 67% compared to the same period in 2019, while in the fourth quarter of last year, it increased by 224% compared to the same period before the pandemic.

Other Southeast Asian countries have seen quite high growth rates but still lower than Vietnam. For example, in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2019, the demand for international travel in Indonesia increased by 116%, Thailand increased by 94%, and the Philippines increased by 88%.
According to Google Search data, 65% of Vietnamese searches are for destinations in Southeast Asia, followed by Malaysians and Singaporeans, with more than 50%. However, Thai and Filipinos are not interested in regional tourism, with only 23-28% of searches for neighboring countries. The destinations outside the region that Vietnamese tourists are most interested in are Australia, Japan, India and the US.

In addition, the most searched cultural, heritage and historical destinations include Bukittinggi, Indonesia; Tawau, Malaysia; Ban Saeo, Thailand; San Fernando, Philippines and Vinh, Vietnam. The top 4 most popular scenic destinations include Ha Long Bay in Vietnam.
