Vietnam’s outbound tourism market continues to demonstrate positive growth potential, despite ongoing economic difficulties. Survey results on Vietnamese tourists planning to travel abroad within the next 12 months show that 79.7% of them expressed their intention to take the trip this summer. However, it is worth noting that only 22.2% of tourists surveyed have booked services (in full or in part) for the trip, the majority of the remaining tourists are only planning or considering choosing a suitable destination.
According to The Outbox Company, one of the most notable points of the Vietnamese outbound tourism market in the summer of 2024 is the rise of the middle-aged tourist segment. Survey results show that Gen X (those born between 1965 and 1980) is the leading market segment for this summer; with 58.8% of tourists in this group surveyed saying they will take at least one overseas trip this summer. This figure is twice as high as the survey results of the younger tourist group in the Gen Z segment.
Regional tourism continues to be the dominant trend for Vietnamese people when traveling abroad, with 64.4% of Vietnamese tourists choosing nearby destinations in Asia for their next trip. Vietnamese tourists remain "loyal" to traditional destinations such as Korea, Japan, Thailand or Singapore. Notably, China has replaced Taiwan (China) to become the new prominent destination in the top 5 international destinations loved by Vietnamese tourists, according to a survey by The Outbox Company.
Regarding tourism budget, it can be seen that the difficult economic situation continues to directly affect the tourism spending budget of the Vietnamese tourist market traveling abroad, when most of the reasons for the increase or decrease in spending of Vietnamese tourists are focused on financial and cost concerns.
On the other hand, the survey results also show a positive point that tourism is increasingly becoming an important activity for Vietnamese people when up to 31% of tourists are willing to spend more on travel experiences and 45.6% of Vietnamese tourists still maintain the same travel budget as before.
The average spending of Vietnamese tourists for overseas travel this summer is expected to be around 1,000 - 1,500 USD. The spending level will vary depending on the destination chosen by tourists, with destinations outside Asia, Vietnamese tourists are willing to pay more than 2,000 USD for a trip. The peak of the summer for outbound tourism is forecast to fall in June and July this year.
