Quang Ninh is home to many ethnic groups such as Kinh, Tay, Dao, San Diu, San Chi... Each ethnic group has its own unique cultural features, from costumes, languages to traditional festivals. The combination of these cultural elements creates a colorful picture, both preserving traditional values and promoting integration and mutual understanding among communities. Through cultural values, each ethnic group not only learns to love and respect each other's identity, but also looks forward to a sustainable and developing common future.
“Soft power” unites the people
Putting aside the worries of daily life and work, every evening at around 8:00 p.m., the women in the New Star Club of Nguyen Du neighborhood, Quang Ha town, Hai Ha district gather at the neighborhood cultural house to join in the vibrant folk dances. Having joined the folk dance club since its establishment, Ms. Pham Thi Dinh has mastered every dance and movement in different genres of music. Ms. Dinh happily said: “After a tiring day at work, after cleaning the house, cooking dinner and eating with family members. Instead of staying at home watching TV, we go to the neighborhood cultural house to practice folk dance with the women. Not only is it a healthy hobby, this spiritual and cultural activity also helps us become more flexible, healthier and closer to each other.
The models of mass cultural and artistic clubs are increasingly developing strongly in the community, contributing to preserving and promoting the cultural identity and customs of ethnic groups, and at the same time becoming the "glue" to unite the solidarity between neighbors and ethnic groups, promoting the spirit of sharing and supporting each other in life.
In 2012, the Then singing - Tinh lute club of Hoanh Mo commune, Binh Lieu district was established. Since then, the club's activities have been held regularly, becoming a destination for Then lovers and a large number of Tay people in the area. Folk artist Tran Siu Thu, Chairman of the club, said: Initially, the club only had a few members, now the number of members has increased to 38. Not only do we maintain regular weekly activities, actively participate in performances in commune and district programs, but when mobilized, we also perform in the province. The Then singing - Tinh lute club of Hoanh Mo commune also regularly has exchange programs with the Dong Tong art club, Phong Thanh Cang city (Guangxi, China). These programs also bring many opportunities to broaden knowledge and make friends for club members.
Not only stopping at the scale of the club, festival activities and cultural days of ethnic minorities are also becoming a bridge to bring culture far and bring people closer together, contributing to improving the spiritual life of the people.
In early December 2024, in Tien Yen district, the Hoang Can Temple Festival and the San Diu Ethnic Culture and Sports Festival 2024 took place. The festival has many unique activities, imbued with the culture of the San Diu people such as the Great Phan Ceremony, the New Rice Offering Ceremony of the San Diu people, performances of San Diu wedding excerpts, traditional culinary competition of the San Diu people, cultural exchange programs, performances of Soong Co folk songs, performances of male and female costumes of the San Diu ethnic group; at the same time, a number of items are displayed and traditional products of the San Diu ethnic group are introduced and sold...
Held annually, the Hoang Can Temple Festival and the San Diu Ethnic Culture and Sports Festival in Tien Yen District 2024 are not only limited to Hai Lang Commune or Tien Yen District but also welcome many visitors representing the San Diu ethnic community in the province and other provinces and cities such as Vinh Phuc, Bac Giang, Tuyen Quang, Hanoi, etc. The participating delegations participate in cultural, artistic, and sports exchanges, sing Soong Co, and perform San Diu costumes. Ms. Lam Thi Thanh Hai (San Diu ethnic group), Ha Phong Ward, Ha Long City, said: Every year, we often attend this event to participate in cultural activities of the San Diu people. What I like most is the reenactment of the San Diu wedding procession, chicken dance, onion dance, and the beautiful tray competition, etc. This activity helps our people connect more closely with each other, especially the beauty of the San Diu people is known to many tourists.
Cultural activities such as traditional festivals, ethnic cultural festivals or community art programs not only contribute to preserving unique cultural values, but also create opportunities for ethnic groups to exchange and understand each other, thereby cultural diversity does not become a barrier but is honored as a common asset that unites people in a spirit of harmony and mutual respect.
Investing in culture
With 43 ethnic groups living together, Quang Ninh also has a huge amount of intangible culture including festivals, customs, practices, folk games, and traditional crafts. Among them are many unique festivals such as: Village festival of Dao ethnic group in Bang Ca commune (Ha Long city); Palm wave festival, Luc Na communal house festival of Tay ethnic group in Luc Hon commune (Binh Lieu district); Tien Cong festival, Bach Dang festival (Quang Yen town); Quynh Lam pagoda festival, An Sinh temple festival (Dong Trieu town); Cua Ong temple festival (Cam Pha city); Yen Tu festival (Uong Bi city)...
Identifying culture as a strength and endogenous resource for development, the province always focuses on preserving and promoting the value of diverse and rich tangible and intangible cultural resources in the area. The system of cultural and sports institutions at all levels has been invested in and built quite synchronously, helping communes, wards, towns, villages, and neighborhoods to serve well the needs of meetings, activities and exchanges of cultural and artistic clubs... of the people. Every year, cultural houses attract an average of 40% of people to participate in activities in mountainous areas and 50% in plain areas.
The work of restoring, embellishing, preserving and promoting tangible and intangible cultural heritage has been given attention. In the last 5 years alone, the province has spent nearly 4,800 billion VND on the field of culture and sports. 100% of national relics and 70% of provincial relics have been restored and embellished with a total cost of over 1,600 billion VND. In addition to preserving, maintaining and promoting cultural values, this activity also creates conditions for ethnic minorities in the province to have more places for spiritual and cultural activities, exchanges and demonstrations of solidarity.
In August 2024, the Thanh Y Dao Cultural Space Exhibition House was inaugurated in Khe Su 2 village, Thuong Yen Cong commune (Uong Bi city). The project has a total investment of 800 million VND, recreating 5 cultural spaces of the Thanh Y Dao people, with bilingual captions (Vietnamese - English), including: Space to display ethnic costumes of men and women; Space to introduce the general introduction of the Coming of Age Ceremony; model of a rammed earth house; space to display the kitchen corner of the Thanh Y Dao people; some images and artifacts associated with the life, activities and culture of the Thanh Y Dao people. The project has become a place for cultural activities of the Thanh Y Dao people in Thuong Yen Cong commune; at the same time, a place to preserve and conserve the traditional cultural values of the people, serving the development of community tourism. Mr. Trieu Van Loan, Khe Su village, Thuong Yen Cong commune (Uong Bi city) excitedly shared: Not only Dao Thanh Y people in Khe Su village and Dao Thanh Y people in neighboring localities, but also people from other provinces come to visit and admire. This place has also become a place for people to meet each other on holidays, Tet or important events.
Paying attention to culture, in 2023, Quang Ninh province also issued Resolution No. 17-NQ/TU dated October 30, 2023 of the Provincial Party Committee "On building and promoting cultural values, the strength of Quang Ninh people to become an endogenous resource, a driving force for rapid and sustainable development". In which, continuing to set the goal of building Quang Ninh people with the characteristics: "Courage, Self-reliance, Discipline, Solidarity, Loyalty, Generosity, Creativity, Civilization". From these goals, the cultural values and people of Quang Ninh are increasingly cultivated, becoming a soft power to strengthen the great solidarity bloc, promoting the strength of the entire people in participating in implementing the common socio-economic development tasks of the province.
In particular, the organization of the annual Great Unity Day associated with the cultural identity of each region, village, and area has been creating a vibrant atmosphere, honoring the fine traditional values of the nation as well as strengthening the solidarity among the entire people. This is also an opportunity for each person to further promote the tradition of solidarity and patriotism, joining hands and hearts to build the homeland of Quang Ninh increasingly rich, beautiful, and civilized.
