Demand and quantity of goods at wholesale markets have increased, but according to many traders and merchants, purchasing power is quite slow compared to previous years. Therefore, the selling price of many items has not increased, or even decreased.

Assessing the past 10 years, the purchasing power of vegetables has never been as weak as this year. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai, owner of Tam Hai warehouse (Hoc Mon wholesale market, Hoc Mon district), said that every year he can sell about 20 tons for the whole Tet season, of which 10-12 tons are sold during the 3 peak days of Tet, but this year the possibility is reduced by 25-35% compared to previous years.
Due to the decrease in purchasing power, Mr. Hai said that he does not dare to increase the selling price of many items, some items have even decreased by 15 - 30% compared to last year, such as pickled onions at 50,000 VND/kg, onion clusters at 18,000 VND/kg, bitter melon at 10,000 - 12,000 VND/kg, tomatoes at 8,000 - 10,000 VND...
"I have stocked up on goods but only in small quantities because I'm afraid I won't be able to sell them all. If the market has demand, I'll import more, I don't dare to hold too much," said Mr. Hai.

According to records, many other items at the market are also having good prices or remaining the same price as last year, such as cabbage priced at 7,000 VND/kg, Vinh Chau red onions at 27,000 VND/kg...
Regarding fruit, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chien, owner of a watermelon stall at Hoc Mon wholesale market, said that in previous years during Tet season, he sold 70 - 100 tons, but this year, due to slow purchasing power, he has only sold 15 tons, and it is possible that during the whole Tet season, he will only sell about 40 - 50 tons.
Demand has clearly decreased, so the price Mr. Chien sells is currently stable at 11,000 - 14,000 VND/kg depending on the type, a decrease of 1,000 - 2,000 VND compared to last year.
Similarly, many traders at Thu Duc agricultural wholesale market (Thu Duc city) said that due to weak demand, the price of mangoes of all kinds is decreasing by 20-25% compared to last year, at 20,000-45,000 VND/kg depending on the type; the price of grapefruit is slightly decreasing compared to the same period last year and slightly increasing compared to normal days, at 30,000-50,000 VND/kg.

Many retailers hope that when purchasing power improves during the peak season, prices of some popular items during Tet may increase.
"With the current slow purchasing power in Ho Chi Minh City and in the provinces, it is unlikely that Tet sales will be as good as previous years. Therefore, if prices of popular products increase, they will be moderate," said Ms. Tran Hang, a trader at Thu Duc wholesale market.
According to Thu Duc agricultural wholesale market, December this year has only 29 days, so the peak days are from 24 to 27 Tet. During this period, the amount of goods entering the market gradually increases, including 1,800 - 2,500 tons of vegetables per day, 1,600 - 2,500 tons of fruits per day, and 100 - 380 tons of fresh flowers per day.

A representative of the management board of the Hoc Mon food wholesale market (Hoc Mon district) said that the amount of goods imported to the market on January 22 reached 2,900 tons, an increase of 25% compared to normal days, and the peak during Tet is expected to reach about 3,500 tons/night; the amount of pigs coming to the market is currently 6,000 - 6,500 pigs/night, an increase of about 1,000 pigs compared to normal, and the peak during Tet can reach 10,000 - 12,000 pigs/day.
Pork prices have increased significantly compared to last year.
According to a representative of Hoc Mon wholesale market, the price of grade 1 live pigs is currently at 68,000 - 69,000 VND/kg, an increase of 10,000 - 12,000 VND compared to the same period last year. The increase in live pig prices has pushed the wholesale price of pork pieces at the market to 92,000 VND/kg, an increase of 18,000 - 20,000 VND compared to last year; the price of pork cuts is currently 99,000 VND/kg, an increase of 20,000 VND compared to the same period last year.
Explaining the increase in pork prices, the leader of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade said that the previous low pork prices and the complicated disease situation caused many farmers to reduce their herds. Therefore, at this time, the supply is reduced, pushing the price up compared to last year.
"The increase and decrease are cyclical so there is no need to worry too much, and the supply of pigs for the city during Tet is likely to be guaranteed, many companies have even committed to reducing prices near Tet."
