High pork prices have not yet affected the CPI

In April 2020, the price of live pigs reached 105,000 VND/kg, CPI increased by 6.73%. Currently, the price of live pigs is around 80,000 VND/kg, not having a big impact on the CPI index.

Pig prices continue to rise

The price of live pigs today, March 5, 2025, is still increasing slightly, scattered in some localities across the country. Currently, live pigs nationwide are sold at prices ranging from 73,000 - 82,000 VND/kg.

High pork prices have not yet affected the CPI

In particular, the average price of live pigs in the Northern region is 75,600 VND/kg; in the Central region is 76,500 VND/kg; in the Southern region is 80,600 VND/kg. The price of CP live pigs is 73,000 VND/kg. The current price is about 14,000 - 15,000 VND/kg higher than before Tet; and 23,000 - 25,000 VND/kg higher than the same period last year.

While pork prices in Vietnam continue to increase, pork prices in China show signs of cooling down, falling to 51,600 VND/kg compared to 53,000 VND/kg a few days ago.

The high price of live pigs has pushed up the price of pork. Speaking to a reporter from the Industry and Trade Newspaper, Ms. Thu Hoa - a trader at Kim Lien market (Dong Da district, Hanoi) - said that the price of live pigs has increased so much that many people have stopped going to the market. The reason why the selling price has not increased much is because the purchasing power in the market is quite low, while buying goods to sell is not easy. Because there is not much supply, at pork slaughterhouses, they also give priority to regular customers or those who buy in large quantities.

“Currently, the price of pork is around 100,000 VND/kg. Although many vendors are closed, my sales volume remains the same as the previous days, the quantity has not increased,” said Ms. Thu Hoa.

According to the Industry and Trade Newspaper, at some traditional markets in Hanoi, pork prices are around 120,000 - 150,000 VND/kg. Of which, pork butt is at 120,000 VND/kg; items such as pork belly, lean shoulder, and loin ribs are being sold at 150,000 VND/kg.

No impact on CPI

Talking to reporters of Cong Thuong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Cong Bac - Director of Loc Phat BLLT Livestock Company (Son La) - said that the current price of live pigs at the company is selling to traders at 73,000 VND/kg, helping the company make a profit of about 1.8 - 2 million VND/pig when selling.

The reason for the recent increase in pig prices is the decrease in herds in many localities due to African swine fever and other diseases. According to Mr. Bac's calculations, the number of pigs in localities has decreased by about 30% compared to the same period last year. However, for his company, due to adequate vaccination, the pig herd has not decreased.

Currently, the company has a maximum capacity of raising 10,000 - 11,000 pigs and 1,500 sows and is calculating to expand the scale of pig farming in the near future. "Currently, the cost of raising live pigs is about 58,000 VND/kg, with this price, the company's pig farms still achieve a profit of 18-20%" , Mr. Nguyen Cong Bac informed.

The increase in live pig prices, will it affect the consumer price index (CPI)? Speaking to the press, Mr. Phung Duc Tien - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment - said that in April 2020, the price of live pigs reached 105,000 VND/kg, the consumer price index (CPI) increased by 6.73%. However, the current price of live pigs is fluctuating around below 80,000 VND/kg, the consumer price index (CPI) in January 2025 reached 3.68%, so the price of live pigs has not had a big impact on the consumer price index (CPI).

The high price of live pigs is believed to be due to the ongoing African swine fever epidemic, along with other diseases. Therefore, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment recommends that localities and farmers allocate budgets and promote vaccination.

According to Mr. Phung Duc Tien, the Prime Minister has issued many telegrams to direct this issue, but vaccination in localities has not been uniform. Evidence shows that localities that have promoted vaccination against African swine fever such as Cao Bang, Bac Kan, and Quang Ninh have solved the disease problem. Therefore, vaccination is very important. This is a "steel shield" in disease prevention and control.

Along with that, to reduce the price of live pigs, it is necessary to promote restructuring of the livestock industry, change equipment, breeds, care processes, improve biosecurity and disease safety, thereby improving productivity and quality of the pig herd.

In the context of domestic pig prices being higher than those of other countries, which are currently quite different from those of some countries in the region, industry experts are concerned that there is a high possibility of traders smuggling pigs for high profits, especially in some places with border routes.

Therefore, the authorities must strengthen inspection and strictly control the situation of smuggling of smuggled pigs to avoid diseases threatening domestic livestock production. This work must be carried out regularly and continuously. Localities must have the main role and responsibility, not waiting for ministries or the Government, but must be proactive in preventing smuggling of animals and animal products into the area. If local authorities do not get involved, control will never be achieved.

People buy pork at Hanoi market

Regarding the forecast of live pig prices in the near future, Mr. Nguyen Van Trong - Vice President of the Vietnam Farm Association - said that it is quite difficult to make a forecast because it depends on the disease problem. Because it is currently the season of disease development due to high humidity, if biosecurity in livestock farming is not good, the risk of disease outbreak is very high.

If the epidemic is well controlled, the price of live pigs will decrease, but if the epidemic occurs on a large scale, it is likely that the price of live pigs will continue to increase due to a shortage of supply. If the price reaches over 100,000 VND/kg as in April 2020, it is unlikely to happen because some other food products such as fish, duck meat, chicken meat, etc. are currently quite low. Therefore, consumers will have many options and do not necessarily have to use pork to bear the high price.

The epidemic has pushed the price of live pigs to VND80,000/kg, up nearly 40% over the same period last year. According to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, by the end of 2024, the total pig herd in the country will reach more than 31 million, up 3.3% over 2023, including more than 4 million piglets that have not been weaned.
