On the evening of May 20, in the capital Tehran, the Vietnamese Embassy in Iran solemnly held a ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Iran (August 4, 1973 - August 4, 2023).
Attending the ceremony were General To Lam, Politburo member, Minister of Public Security, Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran Alireza Bigdeli, Deputy Minister of Justice of Iran Askar Jalailan, Chairman of the Iran-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentary Group Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi, Chairman of the Iran-Vietnam Friendship Association Kamal Sajjadi, Ambassadors, Charge d'Affaires of countries and international organizations, representatives of a number of Iranian businesses and media agencies, embassy staff, representatives of Vietnamese expatriates in Iran and many international friends.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Iran Luong Quoc Huy affirmed that the friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Iran have been continuously strengthened and developed over the years. According to the Ambassador, 50 years ago, after the Paris Agreement on ending the war and restoring peace in Vietnam was signed, Iran and Vietnam officially established diplomatic relations on August 4, 1973.
With the attention and nurturing of the leaders of the two countries over many periods, the Vietnam - Iran relationship has had many developments, in which important milestones were Iran opening an embassy in Hanoi in 1991 and Vietnam opening an embassy in Tehran in 1997.
Over the past 50 years, Vietnam and Iran have maintained traditional political and diplomatic relations and good friendship, demonstrated through many official high-level visits by senior leaders of the two countries. The Ambassador emphasized that Vietnam and Iran have great potential for cooperation in the fields of economics, trade, investment, tourism, culture and people-to-people exchange.
To date, the two countries have held nine meetings of the Intergovernmental Committee and seven political consultations at the deputy ministerial level. Bilateral trade between the two countries is still modest and not commensurate with the potential for cooperation between the two sides.
The Ambassador affirmed that the Vietnamese Embassy in Iran will continue to act as a bridge for the two countries to continue effectively implementing the documents and cooperation mechanisms that the two sides have signed and established in recent years, increasing the exchange of delegations, especially high-level delegations, promoting the role of Friendship Associations and Friendship Parliamentarians' Groups between the two countries, enhancing people-to-people exchanges, and promoting twinning between localities of the two countries to enhance mutual understanding.
The Ambassador said that the two sides need to step up trade-investment promotion activities, business forums, enhance business connections, and promote the early organization of negotiations and signing of a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) between the two countries.
With the solid foundation of traditional friendship, the growing role and position of Iran in West Asia and Vietnam in Southeast Asia as well as the great potential in economic cooperation between the two countries, the Ambassador expressed his belief that the Vietnam - Iran relationship will have new developments, worthy of the potential of both sides, for the benefit of the people of both countries.
Agreeing with Ambassador Luong Quoc Huy's opinion, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Alireza Bigdeli highly appreciated the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Iran, affirming that Asia and Southeast Asia are one of the priorities in Iran's foreign policy, and on that basis, the policy of the Iranian President E. Raisi's Administration is to expand relations with countries in this region, including Vietnam.
Mr. Bigdeli hopes that with great potential for cooperation, bilateral relations in all fields will develop strongly in the coming time.
