SK Telecom said that its revenue from data centers and cloud businesses recorded strong growth in the second quarter of 2023. In addition, the carrier is actively investing in emerging areas such as metaverse and urban air mobility (UAM) to improve its future capabilities.
Specifically, from April to June this year, SK Telecom achieved revenue of 4.3064 trillion won ($3.27 billion) and operating profit of 463.4 billion won, up 0.4% and 0.8% compared to a year ago.
While overall performance was flat, data center revenue grew 30% year-over-year, while cloud revenue grew more than 60% over the same period.
One of SK Telecom’s major diversification initiatives is to become an AI company. On July 27, the carrier launched the Global Telecom AI Alliance with other companies such as Deutsche Telekom, e& and Singtel. The alliance will combine each other’s core AI capabilities to jointly develop a telecom AI platform, which will play a key role in planning new AI services.
SK Telecom already has its own AI assistant service called A. (A dot). In June 2023, it added Chat T – leveraging the ChatGPT model – to A. to provide rich information to users as if they were chatting with an expert.
SK Telecom will continue to rely on cooperation and self-reliance to secure leadership in the global AI market and become an AI company, according to CFO Kim Jin-won.
