On the morning of February 2 (December 23), many people came to Dieu Phap Pagoda (Binh Thanh District) to release carp to send Ong Cong and Ong Tao to heaven.
According to Dan Tri reporters, many people bringing fish to the riverbank expressed their joy when seeing the fisheries inspection ship and police canoe present in the Saigon River area.
"Last year, when I released the fish, some people used nets to catch them. I felt sad because the fish were caught as soon as they were released. This year, seeing the police appear to monitor, I and everyone here feel somewhat reassured about the fate of the fish," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Dieu (living in Binh Thanh District).
According to Vietnamese culture, every December 23rd of the lunar calendar, the Kitchen God rides a carp to heaven to report everything that happened during the year to the Jade Emperor.
Goldfish is a symbol of luck, also a symbol of overcoming difficulties, the ability to "cross the dragon gate" and become a dragon.
Many people bring fish to the temple to celebrate and then bring them to the Saigon River to release.
Many people also choose to take a boat out to the middle of the river to release the fish instead of releasing them on the shore.
"Every month I buy fish to release. Because there are so many, I rent a boat to the middle of the river to release them in the hope that the fish will adapt to the environment better," said Ms. Pham Ngoc Thao Vy (living in Binh Thanh district).
Many people living near Dieu Phap Pagoda also take advantage of the opportunity to bring their boats here to ferry passengers for hire, earning extra income.
In addition to releasing red carp on Ong Cong Ong Tao Day, many people also release other types of fish such as catfish, snakehead fish... in the last days of the year to pray for peace.
"My family made a simple offering and released fish for the Kitchen Gods to return to heaven early in the morning. Then we went to the temple to worship Buddha and pray for peace for the family during the last days of the year," said Ms. Le Ngoc Hoang Huyen (74 years old).
Releasing carp is also a beautiful custom of Vietnamese people, encouraging doing good and honest things.
