Limit going outdoors, especially from 10am to 4pm, during peak heat waves, the Ministry of Health recommends.

The information is stated in the Health Care Guide for the community and workers in the hot season, in the context of severe heat waves starting to appear in many localities across the country, seriously affecting health.

People who are in a room with low air conditioning should not go out into the sun suddenly. They need time for their body to adapt by increasing the air conditioning temperature in the room or sitting in the shade.

In addition, people should wear light-colored, cool, sweat-absorbent clothes. Increase the intake of green vegetables and fruits, and include soup in daily meals. In particular, drink at least 1.5-2 liters of water per day. Exercise to improve your resistance and tolerance to hot weather conditions.

According to the forecast of the Central Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, in 2023, due to the impact of El Nino, heat waves, droughts, and severe water shortages will occur. Some serious health problems that can easily occur are heatstroke, heat exhaustion, or stroke.

Therefore, people who have to work in hot weather should arrange their working time during cool times such as early morning or late afternoon. Limit working time in high temperature environments. If you have to work, you should not stay in hot weather for too long, avoid excessive physical activities. You should periodically rest in a cool place for about 15-20 minutes after about 45 minutes to an hour of work.

Minimize the amount of sunlight exposure to the body, especially the neck and shoulders. Use appropriate personal protective equipment such as protective clothing, hats, caps, and glasses. Wear loose, cool, sweat-absorbent clothing. You can also use sunscreen.

Do not use alcoholic beverages. Drink water regularly during work hours. In particular, drink water with added salt and minerals such as Oresol for those who sweat a lot, follow the manufacturer's instructions when drinking.

Take measures to cool the workplace such as using canopies, heat-reflecting panels, insulation materials, water spraying and misting systems, installing air conditioning systems, and suitable ventilation fan systems.

On May 21, the Ministry of Health also requested hospitals nationwide to strengthen heat protection for patients and medical staff. Hospitals urgently installed canopies on walkways between buildings and in outdoor areas where there are many relatives of patients.

In addition, it is necessary to review the ventilation status in areas with many patients such as waiting rooms, corridors... and treatment departments, patient rooms, and administrative rooms. Plan to add fans and air conditioners to necessary areas. Ensure adequate supply of free drinking water in clinical departments and waiting rooms.

The past few days have been hot and dry across the country. In early May, Hoi Xuan station (Thanh Hoa) recorded a temperature of 44.1 degrees Celsius - the highest ever recorded in Vietnam. A day later, Tuong Duong station (Nghe An) broke the record with a temperature of 44.2.

The meteorological agency forecasts that the average temperature in May nationwide will generally be 0.5-1 degree Celsius higher than the average of many years, with the Northwest being 1.5 degrees Celsius higher. El Nino is likely to appear in July and August, causing more intense heat and less rain and storms.
