In the event of restarting nuclear power projects in Vietnam, it is important to apply advanced nuclear technologies and ensure the highest safety standards.
On the afternoon of October 17, the Ministry of Science and Technology held a regular press conference for the third quarter of 2024. At the conference, Mr. Pham Quang Minh, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute (under the Ministry of Science and Technology), expressed his views on restarting nuclear power projects in Vietnam.
According to Mr. Minh, in the context of combating climate change and balancing CO2 according to the commitments at COP26 and COP28, green transformation in the power source structure is very necessary. The current trend of many countries is to develop nuclear power combined with renewable energy.
Nuclear power plays an important role in baseload, creating reliability and stability for the power system. In addition, nuclear power is a power source that emits almost no CO2 (emissions equivalent to hydropower and wind power), and will be an important power source in the power structure of many countries in the coming time.
The restart of nuclear power projects to serve socio-economic development in Vietnam is reflected in the context of sustainable energy development policies, ensuring energy security and commitments to reduce carbon emissions, achieving the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
"Nuclear power is considered an important solution to ensure energy security for Vietnam in the context of sharply increasing electricity consumption demand. Besides renewable energy sources, nuclear power can help balance energy supply, ensuring stability for the economy and society in the long term," said Mr. Minh.
Mr. Minh said that in the case of restarting nuclear power projects, it is very important to apply advanced nuclear technologies and ensure the highest safety standards. On the other hand, developing nuclear power will create a high-quality human resource team to develop the country.
This is also an opportunity to strongly promote science and technology, especially promoting the application of nuclear engineering and radiation technology in the fields of medicine, agriculture, industry and environmental resources to new heights; promoting fundamental industries for national development (mechanical engineering, measurement, automatic control, chemical technology, metallurgical steel materials...).
“According to the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute, researching and considering restarting nuclear power projects to serve socio-economic development is important and necessary at the present stage,” Mr. Minh emphasized.
At the press conference, Mr. Tran Anh Tu, Deputy Director of the Department of High Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, shared specific solutions and contributions of the Ministry of Science and Technology to successfully implement the Strategy for developing Vietnam's semiconductor industry to 2030 and vision to 2050 recently issued by the Prime Minister.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Science and Technology will coordinate with ministries, sectors, organizations and enterprises to remove difficulties and continue to improve mechanisms and policies to promote the development of the semiconductor industry in Vietnam. At the same time, strengthen international cooperation in science and technology in the semiconductor field.
In particular, through the network of science and technology representative offices in a number of countries and territories, the Ministry of Science and Technology will promote support for finding partners and technologies for connection and technology transfer. The Ministry of Science and Technology will continue to organize conferences, scientific seminars, and activities related to the semiconductor field to enhance connections, attract scientists and speakers at home and abroad to participate in sharing, joint research and technology transfer in the semiconductor field.
Mr. Tran Anh Tu also said that the Ministry of Science and Technology has submitted to the Prime Minister the National Product Development Program to 2030 (Decision No. 157/QD-TTg dated February 1, 2021). At the same time, the Ministry has issued Circular No. 04/2024/TT-BKHCN regulating the management of the National Product Development Program to 2030. The Ministry of Science and Technology will prioritize and focus on implementing the National Product Program, including semiconductor microchip products.
