“Research on the value of cultural landscape of Hue heritage and surrounding areas in preserving and promoting the value of Hue Monuments Complex”​

According to Director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center Hoang Viet Trung, over the past years, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center and the Institute for Urban and Regional Studies, Waseda University have coordinated and conducted in-depth research on the cultural landscape and historical ecological environment at the Nguyen Dynasty royal tombs associated with the landscape of the Huong River area. This workshop aims to report and evaluate the results of the 2019-2023 research cooperation program of the two units.

At the workshop, experts and researchers shared experiences and research results of both sides on the values, characteristics and potential of cultural landscapes, historical environments and relic landscapes along the Huong River basin, including clarifying, identifying and adjusting protection zone 1 (core zone), protection zone 2 (buffer zone) and transition zones connecting important relics to create protection zones for cultural landscapes and outstanding global values ​​of the Hue Monuments Complex, ensuring conservation in harmony with the purpose and orientation of socio-economic development of the province.

Proposing to support the development of local tourism around the Hue relic area to encourage local people - those who are living in the heritage to join hands to protect the landscape and environment, protect the heritage and this is also to create livelihoods for the people. Providing directions and proposals to expand the community-based ecological research tourism program around the relic area to contribute to preserving and promoting the value of the Hue Monuments Complex.

Experts, managers, scholars, and researchers also exchanged views on the protection of cultural landscape buffer zones with the aim of protecting the integrity, maintaining and sustainably developing cultural - historical, landscape, and environmental values; developing a suitable plan to delimit and protect heritage for area II; and establishing an eco-tourism model at the Nguyen kings' tombs.

The results of the workshop will supplement the research on the project of Planning, preserving, restoring and renovating the Complex of Hue Monuments until 2030 and vision to 2050. In addition, it will be considered to be added to the dossier for re-nomination of the Complex of Hue Monuments with the criteria of Cultural Landscape. This is also an effort of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center in particular and Thua Thien Hue in general in implementing the Monuments Planning project and building the re-nomination dossier to once again honor the Complex of Hue Monuments as a World Cultural Landscape Heritage according to the recommendations of UNESCO and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in previous years.
