On the afternoon of September 16, the 9th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians concluded after two days of active, urgent, friendly, united and highly responsible work. The conference completed the entire official agenda.
At the closing session, the conference heard reports on the results of three discussion sessions; listened to presentations and adopted the Statement on "The role of youth in promoting the implementation of sustainable development goals through digital transformation and innovation".
“This is the first statement of the Global Young Parliamentarians’ Conference through its 9th edition. It demonstrates the determination, high consensus and strong commitment of young parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in promoting the implementation of sustainable development goals on a global scale,” National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue emphasized in his closing remarks at the conference.
According to the Chairman of the Vietnamese National Assembly, the success of the 9th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians shows that the IPU Young Parliamentarians Forum is a very necessary and useful forum for young parliamentarians. The success of the conference also affirms the importance of young parliamentarians in particular and young people in general as future owners of each country, nation and the whole world in participating in implementing the goals and tasks of the IPU and the United Nations.

National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue asked the IPU Secretariat and IPU member parliaments to disseminate the results of this conference to the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development Goals to be held in New York soon.
“I also propose that the IPU and call on member parliaments to actively implement the Conference Declaration; at the same time, establish appropriate mechanisms for cooperation and mutual support, especially between developed and developing countries in digital transformation and innovation,” said the Chairman of the Vietnamese National Assembly.
The conference’s joint statement noted that, with less than seven years to go to achieve the MDGs, only 12% of the targets are currently being met, while 50% of the targets are still moderately or severely behind schedule. These results require not only serious reflection but also more decisive action, with particular attention to the remaining gaps in achieving the goals of education, gender equality, employment and economic growth, climate action and peace, justice and institutions, as these are of particular concern to young people.
“We need to work faster, more creatively and with greater urgency to achieve the common agenda that all countries have agreed to,” the young parliamentarians unanimously pledged.

The conference also agreed that the opportunities ahead are clear and open to all, but a large gender gap still exists. It is unreasonable that women are 26% less likely to own a smartphone than men. Digital transformation and innovation must be an opportunity to promote gender equality by facilitating new paths for women to increase their autonomy.
As key innovators, technology users and technology enablers, young people are playing a pivotal role in driving digital transformation and innovation.
