The sudden passing of artist Nguyen Phan Manh Duy at the age of 36 left his colleagues shocked and saddened.
Artist Nguyen Phan Manh Duy passed away at 6:00 p.m. on October 21 due to respiratory failure, at the age of 36.
Sharing with VietNamNet, conductor Le Ha My - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) - still cannot believe that Manh Duy has passed away.
On the afternoon of October 18, Le Ha My and her colleagues received information that Manh Duy was hospitalized at District 8 Hospital due to viral fever.
The male artist also posted a photo of an IV, jokingly sharing: "I was planning to get an IV to stay healthy, but unexpectedly got hooked to an oxygen tank."
“We thought Duy just had a normal viral fever so we called to check on him. He was still conscious, texting people to joke around, and even asked his students to buy food to bring to the hospital for him. No one expected his condition to change so quickly and Duy to pass away forever,” Le Ha My said.
According to the Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera, despite having a viral fever, Manh Duy's blood oxygen level (SpO2) was very low, only 79-80%, so the doctors requested hospitalization for monitoring.
The condition worsened rapidly, the male artist suffered from infection and respiratory failure. Doctors transferred him to the Emergency Department of Cho Ray Hospital. However, he passed away on the way to the hospital.
“When Duy passed away, his mother was by his side, and his family took him back to his hometown for the funeral that night,” he said. The HBSO leadership and artists plan to go to Da Lat on the morning of October 24 to say goodbye and see the male artist off on his final journey.
In the memory of young artist Thuy Trang, Manh Duy is a brother, a colleague who always helps everyone, an artist who is always full of enthusiasm and dedication to his profession.
“Mr. Duy always supports and shares his experiences with those who are new to the profession. In daily life, he has a friendly and easy-going personality, so he is loved by many teachers and colleagues, especially students of the Conservatory of Music,” said Thuy Trang.
Artist Hoang Kim met Nguyen Phan Manh Duy from the musical "Giang Huong's Love Story" in 2016, and then gradually became close. The two were surprised when their personalities were very compatible and similar to the point that "just looking into each other's eyes or sending a photo was enough to understand each other's intentions".
Not only do they share about work, they also talk about life and family, often invite each other to eat, drink, watch movies or go shopping.
An 8-year friendship made Hoang Kim consider Manh Duy as a family member. When she gave birth, he came to visit and brought a lot of diapers for the baby.
Manh Duy's sudden passing left her shocked and bewildered. Hoang Kim also regretted not asking more questions and not having time to visit him.
"The day I met Duy during rehearsals at the theater, he said he was sick, but I only asked him casually because I thought he just had a common cold. I didn't expect that would be the last time we saw each other...", the female artist shared.
Meritorious Artist Pham Khanh Ngoc said she was shocked and bewildered when she heard the bad news about her colleague. On October 18, Manh Duy posted a photo of him being hospitalized on his personal page. The female artist also commented to ask about him and received a joking reply from her junior: "The new song is so difficult to sing that I have to breathe a lot."
“The passing of Manh Duy, whom we affectionately called “Nho”, is a great loss for the theatre as well as his colleagues. Duy had actively participated in the choir for nearly 10 years at the theatre, attending most of the programs with everyone,” said Pham Khanh Ngoc.
In real life, Pham Khanh Ngoc and Nguyen Phan Manh Duy have a close sisterly relationship. The two often confide, chat, and experience many moments in life together. The opera artist remembers that in 2019, when she attended a chamber music competition in Hanoi, Manh Duy, despite being busy, still flew from Can Tho to cheer her on in the final night, then flew back that night.
“Duy lived peacefully with his friends and everyone. We were surprised and shocked, but we also suppressed our grief, hoping that God would call Duy home, hoping that he would rest in peace in God’s house,” she said emotionally.
The funeral of artist Nguyen Phan Manh Duy was held at Chi Lang Parish Church (Da Lat, Lam Dong). Afterwards, the coffin will be cremated locally on October 25.
