Last week, when the free Traditional Musical Instrument class was organized by the Thach Giam Town Youth Union in collaboration with the Tuong Duong District Traditional Musical Instrument Preservation and Promotion Club, artisan Xen Van Long in Pung village, Luu Kien commune, Tuong Duong district had to travel more than 30km to attend the class.

Although the road from home to the classroom had to cross many streams and hills, he did not feel tired. Just seeing the children enthusiastically practicing made all the hardships disappear.

Sharing the same goal of spreading love for traditional musical instruments, artisan Lay Dai Cuong from Ve village, Yen Na commune also traveled more than 25km to come to the class.

At the age of 70, having to travel such a long distance under the scorching summer sun, it is inevitable that there will be times of fatigue. However, Mr. Cuong himself always keeps in mind that traditional cultural features of the nation are always the roots that need to be preserved and cherished. Therefore, as soon as the Thach Giam Town Youth Union proposed organizing this free class, he and the members of the club enthusiastically participated.

Artisan Luong Van Huynh - Head of the Club for Preservation and Promotion of Traditional Musical Instruments of Tuong Duong District said that not only the two artisans above, but also many artisans in the club had to travel long distances to come to this free teaching class.

They can be farmers, security guards or retired officials, but regardless of their status, they always carry within them the passion to teach the younger generation the beauty of their national culture.

For example, artisan Vi Van Quynh (born in 1958, in Chan village, Thach Giam town) has an extremely difficult situation when he has to take care of the housework and his wife who has been seriously ill for the past 13 years. However, when the Youth Union wanted the club to cooperate to organize a class, he tried his best to arrange all the work to teach the children with everyone.

Also one of the active individuals in this free class, Meritorious Artist Luong Van Pan (born in 1968) in Khe Ngau village, Xa Luong commune is always present at all the lectures to accompany the children. The distance he has to overcome is also over 10km.

In the bustling atmosphere of the classroom, the artisans diligently taught the children the captivating melodies of the panpipes, flutes, gongs, etc. Looking at the Thai students excitedly discovering their ethnic musical instruments for the first time, artisan Luong Van Pan could not hide his joy as he shared: The treasure trove of Thai ethnic musical instruments in Western Nghe An in general, and Tuong Duong district in particular, is quite rich with various types of pi, panpipes, tap tinh lutes, gongs, tung tinh lutes, etc.

With diverse sounds, musical instruments can express most of the range of human emotions, and can accompany many genres of music, from folk songs to modern songs. Gongs, cymbals, and various types of panpipes and pipes have created a lively, exciting harmony, expressing the optimism, love of life, and solidarity of the Thai ethnic community through many generations.

It is known that the class was organized by Thach Giam Town Youth Union in coordination with the Club for Preservation and Promotion of Traditional Musical Instruments of Tuong Duong District. 20 members of the Club for Preservation and Promotion of Traditional Musical Instruments of Tuong Duong District participated in teaching the children.

The classes are held on average 3 times a week for 2 months in the summer and are completely free. During this time, the artists will teach the children to master the musical instruments that are imbued with the cultural identity of their ethnic group. From there, promptly discover and nurture the core of the arts, contributing to gradually promoting the development of community tourism associated with preserving the good cultural values of the ethnic groups in the district.

Ms. Lo Thi Lan - Secretary of the Youth Union of Thach Giam town shared: This is one of the meaningful activities of the 2023 Summer Youth Volunteer Campaign of the district's youth to create a useful and healthy playground for children in the area. At the same time, it inspires and fosters passion for traditional musical instruments, creating a premise to bring traditional cultural values, imbued with national identity to the young generation.

In recent days, after the class was organized, it has received enthusiastic participation from children and their parents. What makes the students and the local people feel the most burdened is the hardship of the artisans when participating in teaching the children. They have to sacrifice many things, from time, effort to additional expenses, but they are still enthusiastic in each teaching session. It is a silent sacrifice that needs to be respected and honored./.
