Sputnik posted a video of four Ukrainian soldiers crossing the Dnieper River on a raft made of empty plastic bottles this week. They decided to cross the river to surrender to Russia.
Russia released a video of four Ukrainian soldiers making a raft out of plastic bottles and crossing a river to surrender (Video: Sputnik).
According to a source from the Russian security service, Ukrainian soldiers had previously contacted Moscow to inform them of their intention to surrender. Therefore, Russia mobilized a group of soldiers to wait on the riverbank to arrest the Ukrainian servicemen.
The defection of the Ukrainian soldiers went smoothly and all four are now safe. Ukraine has not commented on this information.
This is not the first case of Ukrainian soldiers defecting to the Russian side. In May, Ukrainian soldier Maksim Likhachev surrendered to the Russian army after driving his unit's T-64 tank across the front line towards Moscow.
Russia's RIA news agency said on July 4 that Mr. Likhachev had received a Russian passport after applying for citizenship in June. Likhachev told RIA that he was looking for a new life and believed everything would be fine.
In June, a Ukrainian soldier crossed the Dnieper River on a homemade raft made from plastic bottles to surrender to Russia.
Russia has also accepted surrendered Ukrainian soldiers into its military after conducting rigorous background checks. Late last year, Russia sent a volunteer battalion of surrendered Ukrainian soldiers into combat after a period of training.
