Neville: 'Man Utd have found themselves again'

Former defender Gary Neville was not surprised when Man Utd lost 1-2 to Nottingham Forest in round 20 of the Premier League, and said that this result reflects the image of his old club this season.

"Man Utd were themselves again - inconsistent and terrible," Neville told Sky Sports . "They left the pitch as a team that had lost. The Man Utd fans behind the goal will be disappointed. But don't forget Nottingham Forest played very well today. They gave the fans at the City Ground a memorable evening."

The former Man Utd captain added that he was unsure what direction the club was heading in. According to Neville, everyone agreed that Erik ten Hag had done well in his first season, but Man Utd had just brought in a new manager and all they saw was the fans leaving.

Yesterday saw Man Utd lose their ninth Premier League game of the season. It came just after they came from behind to beat second-placed Aston Villa 3-2 in the previous round. The "Red Devils" are currently seventh with 31 points after 20 rounds.

This is not the first time Man Utd has disappointed immediately after a positive result. In round 17, Man Utd were praised when they drew 0-0 at Liverpool. But immediately after that, they lost 0-2 to West Ham. Experts have repeatedly pointed out the instability of the Old Trafford team. On December 25, Neville once assessed that Man Utd this season is "untrustworthy" due to lack of stability.

After yesterday's defeat, Ten Hag complained about the injury situation at Man Utd. He said this was the biggest reason for the team's ups and downs this season. In this aspect, Neville showed sympathy and said that Man Utd need the pillars to return more than ever to prepare for the final stage of the season.

Neville also used Antony to describe the current image of the club. The Brazilian striker moved for $109 million in 2022 but struggled to integrate into the Premier League. This season, Antony's form has become even worse. He has not had a hand in any goals in 21 matches in all competitions.

"For $100 million or $110 million, Antony has never shown that he is worth it," said the 48-year-old former defender. "There are a lot of Man Utd signings that are undervalued and fans around the world have lost faith in them. Man Utd's transfer department cannot value Antony and buy him for that price. I think Ten Hag got involved and forced them to do that. Antony can dribble down the wing, cut inside and shoot. But he is not as good as Riyad Mahrez. I don't think Antony has improved at all."
