Nguyen Han Bach took the IELTS exam at IDP last February and successfully achieved a perfect score of 9.0. Up to now, Bach is probably the youngest person in Vietnam to achieve this score (previously, Nguyen Quy Anh, class 12 English 1, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted).
Surprised with the score
Sharing with Thanh Nien reporter about his feelings when he achieved a perfect IELTS score of 9.0 on the first try, Bach said he was quite surprised, because when he took the practice test, he only got 8.0 - 8.5. "Entering the exam room, I was determined not to get below 8.0, but I didn't think it would be 9.0. I was very surprised," Bach said.
Bach said his journey of learning English was divided into 3 stages. He read English books since kindergarten. When he entered primary school, he took several short courses at an English center.

With IELTS, Bach started taking the first course in the middle and end of grade 9 at an English teaching center. After that, he went to Tay Ho High School and took the IELTS English course of the school and Atlantic training center.
Here, Bach participated in many activities using English, from debates, MCing…; participating in organizing English programs at school. This activity helped him gain a rich English vocabulary, and at the same time encouraged his friends to use English in life and study to be more confident with this language.
To learn English well, Bach said he does not spend any fixed time learning English but uses this language regularly, anytime, anywhere, especially finding opportunities to talk with foreigners.
"I have an aunt in the US. I have lived with her family for more than a month and a half. That can be considered an important experience in my English learning journey. In addition, I study English at school, in class and participate in the excellent student team of primary, secondary and high schools in Tay Ho district," the male student said.
In particular, Bach "revealed" that the secret to being good at English is that he uses English the most during the day. "At home, whatever I play, read, or watch is in English because I find English documents abundant. I like natural sciences and also watch and research in English. That improves my ability and helps me feel confident when using English in communication and taking exams," Bach said.
"Don't think about your score while taking the test"
Asked about the secret to getting a high score on the IELTS test, the male student said that it is to study hard. "No matter how good you are at English, if you don't practice, you will never be able to do the test. I have had good English since I was young, but if I didn't practice, I wouldn't have been able to get this score. Therefore, you still have to work hard, study hard and be disciplined in your practice," Bach emphasized.

From his experience, the male student sent a message to his friends: "When you go to school, you must be proactive in asking your teachers. Teachers are not afraid to answer, because they really like enthusiastic students. That helps me realize my weaknesses and fix them right away, so that I can remember them later. Besides, if you want to study well, you need to try to use English more naturally, in daily life."
In particular, Bach said that if you want to get a high score, you must be really focused when entering the exam room. "When entering the exam room, you need to focus, don't think about the score while doing the test, but think about the test," Bach shared.
Talking about his plans after achieving a 9.0 IELTS score, Bach said that he had previously only taken the test to test his ability, but because his score was "so good", he would use it to apply for university admission. "My further goal is to become an IELTS examiner, because the opportunity to examine IELTS is only for those who have an IELTS score of 9.0 or higher," Bach said.
