TPO - Training and improving foreign language skills for students and teachers is one of the strong solutions implemented by schools in Hanoi in recent times.

Mr. Phung Ngoc Oanh, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Ba Vi (Hanoi) said that in reality, the locality is a suburban district with an education system that still faces many difficulties compared to the general level of the city, especially in foreign languages.

Clearly identifying the difficulties from that reality, since 2019, the Department of Education and Training has implemented the project "Improving the quality of teaching and learning Foreign Languages", in which the first step is to sign a cooperation agreement with the University of Foreign Languages (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) to train and improve the qualifications of teachers.

Ba Vi District People's Committee signed a cooperation agreement with the University of Foreign Languages (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) to train and improve teachers' qualifications.

According to the plan, the improvement of foreign language proficiency for primary and secondary school students will initially be piloted at only 10/35 schools.

After that, the project was evaluated to be effective and implemented in 35/35 secondary schools and by 2025, it will be implemented in all 69/69 secondary schools and primary schools. The plan is considered a breakthrough in improving the quality of English in schools.

Mr. Oanh believes that to have good students, first of all, there must be good teachers, so we should train teachers to improve their standards. Teachers are trained by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, lecturers from universities, especially key English teachers of Ba Dinh district, Nguyen Tat Thanh High School and Secondary School (Hanoi National University of Education); Foreign Language Secondary School (Hanoi University of Foreign Languages) through the movement "Schools join hands to develop - Teachers share responsibility".

Another important factor to motivate students to learn foreign languages is to create an English language development environment for teachers and students.

"To help students get acquainted with and develop the English language through specific activities such as: approaching English through drawings, images, slogans; singing and dancing during class to the music and lyrics of English songs; organizing cultural and artistic activities, group games, English booths; outdoor English libraries...", Mr. Oanh said.

Schools also expand geographical and historical knowledge in English about local and foreign landmarks through communication practice during field trips and experiences.

For secondary school students, in addition to the above activities, schools also organize book promotion sessions, introduce Vietnamese culture in English, hold English speaking contests; organize exchanges between secondary school students and primary school students...

Activities are organized in the form of extracurricular English activities, integrated with practice hours and extracurricular activities of the school.

200+ Club

According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, in addition to training and improving teachers' qualifications , there is also a 200+ club that gathers key English teachers from many different schools.

The club was established with the goal of joining hands to improve the quality of English teaching, building a united educational community, supporting each other with the view that when all teachers and students, wherever they are, have access to equal learning opportunities, then the quality of education will be truly sustainable.
Therefore, the club's activities are not only limited to the inner city areas of Hanoi but also target remote areas where there are many challenges in foreign language education.

Hanoi aims to improve the quality of English teaching in schools, especially schools in disadvantaged areas.

Throughout the IELTS standard improvement course for teachers, with the experiences and knowledge accumulated during the learning and training process, the members of the 200+ Club have carried out the task of supporting teachers wholeheartedly such as: Sharing documents, experiences and directly instructing learning strategies as well as teaching and test-taking skills.

These lessons not only improve foreign language proficiency but also help teachers access modern teaching methods and apply technology, thereby effectively applying them to teaching practice.

In particular, there is a teacher who, despite opening a support class very late at night (from 10:30 pm to 11:30 pm), has attracted many colleagues to actively participate in studying for many consecutive weeks.

In addition, the club also organizes specialized training sessions and online classes to support Yen Bai teachers, teachers in disadvantaged areas and students. For these subjects, the club builds teaching materials, tests and training courses that have been designed to suit the actual needs of the locality.

Mutual support not only helps individuals improve but also contributes to a positive learning environment.

According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, after a period of operation, the club has brought positive results.

That is, the rate of teachers in schools in Hanoi participating in IELTS standard courses has increased to thousands; many teachers have achieved international certificates, affirming their professional capacity; Students in suburban and disadvantaged areas have more and more opportunities to access effective English learning methods, helping them confidently participate in major exams; teachers in inner-city, suburban and local schools share teaching materials and methods.
