The WMO's "Interim State of the Global Climate" report confirms: 2023 will be the hottest year on record. Data recorded up to the end of October shows that the average temperature for the year increased by about 1.4 degrees Celsius (with an amplitude of ± 0.12 degrees Celsius) compared to the pre-industrial period of 1850 - 1900. Last October 2023 was also the hottest month on record.

2024 is predicted to be a year of severe heat and drought.

The difference between 2023 and 2016 or 2020 (which previously ranked as the warmest years) — the last two months — is very unlikely to affect the overall ranking of the year.

Earlier in November, the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said that October 2023 was the hottest month in the past 125,000 years. It was 0.4 degrees Celsius higher than the previous record set in October 2019. "This is a huge difference," experts at C3S emphasized.

The WMO said: A rapidly developing El Nino is likely to add to the heat in 2024 because El Nino typically has its greatest impact on global temperatures after it peaks.

According to experts, most years when El Nino appears are also years when new records for heat are recorded. The reason is that in addition to the El Nino phenomenon itself, there is global warming due to human activities.

For Vietnam, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that heat waves are likely to appear in the Central Highlands and the South from February 2024. During the period from December 2023 to February 2024, the average temperature nationwide will generally be 0.5 - 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than the average of many years.

From March to May 2024, the El Nino phenomenon will still exist but its intensity will gradually decrease. In addition to the Southern and Central Highlands regions, hot weather will also appear in the Central and Northwest regions of the North. The number of hot days in 2024 is likely to be higher. It is necessary to be on guard against extremely hot days, especially in the North and Central regions. It is likely that the Southern and Central Highlands regions will experience prolonged drought. The trend of temperatures nationwide continues to be 0.5 - 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than the average of many years.
