The preliminary results of the 2024 population living standards survey just announced by the General Statistics Office show that household income and living standards have improved over the past year.

Average income of people 5.4 million VND/month
Accordingly, the average income per capita in 2024 will reach about 5.4 million VND/person/month, an increase of 8.8% compared to 2023.
Thus there is a significant difference between per capita income and per capita GDP in 2024.
While the average income per capita in 2024 will reach about 64.8 million VND/year, the average GDP per capita will be about 114 million VND/year, a difference of about 49.2 million VND.
Besides, labor productivity of the whole economy last year reached about 221.9 million VND, equivalent to 9,182 USD.
But the minimum living standard of people in 2024 according to the General Statistics Office is only about 1.8 million VND/person/month.
Specifically, urban areas have a minimum living standard of about 2.3 million VND/person/month, rural areas about 1.7 million VND/person/month.
The minimum living standard is calculated by the General Statistics Office based on the prices of food, foodstuffs, and other essential items related to people's basic needs such as food, housing, and clothing.
The multidimensional poverty rate in 2024 (according to the multidimensional poverty standard for the period 2022-2025) is estimated at about 2.4%, down 1% compared to the previous year.
The survey results of the General Statistics Office in December 2024 also recorded that the rate of households with unchanged income and an increase compared to the previous year was 96.3%, the rate of households with decreased income was 3.7%.
Since the beginning of the year, localities across the country have supported people with meritorious services and their relatives with nearly 33,900 billion VND, supported social protection beneficiaries with 27,300 billion VND, supported poor households, near-poor households, households in difficult circumstances, and social policy households not covered by Decree No. 20/2021 with more than 4,900 billion VND.
In addition, more than 26.7 million social insurance cards/books/free medical examination and treatment cards were distributed and given to beneficiaries.
Also in 2024, the Government, ministries, branches and localities supported people with nearly 22,400 tons of rice.
More than 1 million workers are unemployed
Regarding population, labor, and employment, the General Statistics Office said that the country's population in 2024 will reach 101.3 million people, an increase of more than 1 million people compared to 2023.
Of which, the urban population is 39 million people, accounting for 38.5%, the rural population is 62.3 million people, accounting for 61.5%. In terms of gender, the population in 2024 is 99.2 males/100 females.
The results of the 2024 mid-term population and housing census conducted by the General Statistics Office recorded that the total fertility rate in 2024 reached 1.91 children/woman.
The average life expectancy of the whole country in 2024 is 74.7 years old, of which men are 72.3 years old and women are 77.3 years old.
The country's labor force aged 15 and over in the fourth quarter of 2024 is estimated at 53.2 million people, an increase of 390,100 people compared to the previous quarter.
In 2024, the total number of employed workers will be 51.9 million, an increase of 585,100 people compared to the previous year.
The number of unemployed people of working age in the fourth quarter of 2024 was 764,600 people, a decrease of 142,000 people compared to the same period last year.
In 2024, the average income of workers will be 7.7 million VND/month, an increase of 8.6%, equivalent to an increase of 610,000 VND/month compared to the previous year.
The unemployment rate among working-age people in 2024 is 2.24% (equivalent to about more than 1 million workers), down 0.04% compared to the previous year, of which the urban area is about 2.5% and the rural area is about 2%.
