Accordingly, Mr. Amorn Prakongkwan (54 years old) in Thailand discovered a rare Melo pearl worth 12,000 pounds (more than 360 million VND).
Mr. Amorn Prakongkwan bought 7 conchs weighing about 2 kg from a street vendor to drink with his friends. After cleaning them, Mr. Amorn discovered a mysterious orange round object in the pot. At first, the man threw it in the trash because he thought it was worthless. However, he later found the orange object because he suddenly thought it might be a conch pearl.
Mr. Amorn Prakongkwan's friend also stopped drinking to help investigate and confirm that this orange object was a real pearl.

The news that Mr. Amorn Prakongkwan accidentally found a precious pearl after buying a conch quickly reached the ears of many jewelry collectors.
The Gem and Jewellery Institute of Thailand has also confirmed that the 10.33-carat pearl is genuine. The pearl is valued at £12,000, but Mr Armorn hopes to sell it for around £23,500.
"I often buy and eat many conchs, but I have never discovered a pearl inside until now. I will keep the pearl as a lucky charm. But if someone offers to buy it at a good price, I may sell it and will use the money to buy a new car," Mr. Armorn happily shared.
Why are conch pearls rare?
Melo pearls or melo pearls are formed within the body of the melo snail. These pearls are considered extremely rare because only a small percentage of mollusks produce them. The melo snail is a fairly large snail and can be found in the seas around Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam...

Melo pearls are non-nacre pearls. The process of creating this type of pearl is similar to pearls, which are natural limestone crystals when foreign objects penetrate into sea snails. Unlike normal pearls with white color, Melo pearls have colors ranging from light orange to brown. The quantity of this type of pearl is also very small and rare because it cannot be cultured like pearls.
According to experts, the older the conch, the larger the pearl, the more beautiful the grain and the darker the color. Melo pearls have a hardness of only 19 - 21, while diamond has a hardness of 100. Because they are quite soft, this type of pearl is very susceptible to scratches, abrasions or breakage. Therefore, Melo pearl owners need to take better care of them than most other types of pearls.
The value of the pearl that Mr. Armorn found on the market could be up to thousands of dollars per carat, depending on the quality of the pearl.

Currently, the largest known man-of-war pearl in the world weighs 397.52 carats, about three-quarters the size of a golf ball.
Because of the rarity of the pearl, there is no official standard for pricing. Instead, the pearls are valued based on quality, appearance, carat weight, and individuality. When fashioned into jewelry, pearls can fetch very high prices.
In fact, the famous auction house Christies has auctioned off conch pearls. Accordingly, high-quality pearls often cost over $75,000. Meanwhile, some pearls mounted in jewelry cost over $250,000.
