Ms. Chen Xiufeng is from Jiangsu Province but has been working in Beijing for more than 20 years. Since 2016, this woman has started selling roasted goose legs. These two popular dishes have changed the life of this woman in her 50s.
Her street stall is located at the southwest gate of Peking University. At 15 yuan per serving (51,000 VND), the dish is so popular that students from nearby Tsinghua University line up to buy it.
No one knows her real name, but many generations of students from these two prestigious universities still affectionately call her "Aunt Goose Legs".
But it wasn't until late 2023 that "goose leg aunt" became a strange phenomenon when both of China's top universities convinced her to sell the delicacy exclusively on their campuses. Even China Central Television (CCTV) came to interview her because it was impressed with the story behind it.
Sharing with the media, Ms. Chen said that at that time she was under a lot of pressure when she received contacts from hundreds of strangers on WeChat. Many people came to her stall to see how she sold food.
Under the intense attention, Ms. Chen felt stressed and was forced to suspend trading for several weeks.
"I just want to continue being a barbecue seller and cannot stand the pressure from the spotlight," Ms. Chen confided.
She did not return to business until early 2024. While some suddenly famous individuals want to take advantage of the opportunity to be known by many people to make money, Ms. Chen shared at a forum held at Peking University that she "just wants to make a little money quietly."
When invited to this forum to share her story of making a living with students at Peking University, Ms. Chen described what her workday is like. The first step of her day is to cut goose legs, marinate them with salt and spices for about half an hour, then grill them. She sells more than 200 grilled goose legs every day.
"I have only one sales principle: building trust with customers and committing to food safety and hygiene," she said.
The street vendor believes that everyone should make a long-term plan for their life and work hard in the direction they have planned.
"Life is a long journey. When you are young, you have more opportunities than when you are middle-aged. Everyone is their own hero," she said.
Ms. Chen's talk at the Peking University forum attracted a large audience.
"Her story is a testament to the fact that anyone in any profession deserves respect, as long as they are dedicated to their work," said a Douyin user.
