"Strikes of lightning do happen," Nguyen Tuan (commonly known as Johnny, currently living in Ho Chi Minh City) smiled as he talked about his surprising love story with his young wife. Many years ago, Tuan moved to the US to settle down with his mother. Occasionally, he returned to Vietnam to visit his relatives. At the end of 2017, he returned home and wandered around Ho Chi Minh City alone. When passing by Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, he lingered for a long time to visit the campus. The Vietnamese-American seemed to stop when he saw a banner advertising the course, with a picture of a girl smiling brightly. He wondered if she was a lecturer, a student of the school or a photo model.

The overseas Vietnamese then thought of a way to register for the business administration course that the banner advertised, hoping that he would get information about the girl who made him "fall in love" at first sight (even if it was only through a photo). "I know I'm not going there to study, but if I don't register, I won't know who she is," Mr. Tuan shared about his sudden decision to join the course. This course has a rather expensive tuition fee, up to hundreds of millions of VND because it is taught by foreign teachers. However, the infatuated overseas Vietnamese only thinks of one goal: "to win that girl over". Every day, he diligently goes to school like other students. He has a business in the US but operates and works online. In the following days, after asking around the department, he learned that the pretty girl in the advertisement was a student. She also worked as an assistant every day. He tactfully asked the students, but no one gave him the girl's phone number or work schedule.

Two months after starting school, Tuan met the girl of his dreams. That time, when he saw Thanh appearing to help the lecturer before class, Tuan approached to get to know her. Through the name tag on her shirt, he knew that this girl was Phan My Thanh. However, during that meeting, the overseas Vietnamese still did not get the phone number he wanted. "He showed his interest in me so enthusiastically that everyone in the department knew that he had other 'intentions' besides studying. I was quite worried because my first impression of him was not very good," My Thanh recalled. A week after the first meeting, Mr. Tuan was impatient and thought he could not "sit still" forever, so he went straight to the academic affairs office to find My Thanh and asked for her phone number. My Thanh had 2 phone numbers, 1 personal number, 1 secondary number for work. She often gave her students her work number, but because she changed her SIM that day, she could not remember the secondary number she had just bought, so she had to give Mr. Tuan her main number. The two of them talked to each other more because of that. "At that time, I almost didn't care about other girls, I just wanted to take her out on a date," the overseas Vietnamese said.

Unexpected confession "burns" the distance

My Thanh always kept her distance from the students. However, at that time, her superiors gently reminded her: "Do whatever you want, if the students quit, you will die with me." The young girl reluctantly maintained an awkward relationship with the students, always trying to avoid Mr. Tuan. Seeing that the other person had asked to meet privately so many times, My Thanh could not refuse, so she had to accept. "The first time I went to meet privately, I was so worried that I even sent my location to my group of friends because I was afraid something bad would happen," she recalled with a laugh.

The relationship between the two gradually progressed. Tuan used the excuse of asking about the course but in fact he continuously attacked the beauty by asking her to go out and eat. On the second date, he did not hesitate to express his feelings: "I like you and want to go further, so let's get to know each other." My Thanh thought for a moment and then shyly nodded. The moment the girl with long hair smiled and agreed made Tuan burst into happiness. Until now, every time he recalls that moment, he still feels indescribably moved. My Thanh shared that she herself was surprised when she used to be afraid every time she met Nguyen Tuan but then became his other half. Perhaps his sincerity helped her "burn" the distance and get closer to him. As for Nguyen Tuan, he confided that all his plans had completely changed since the moment he fell in love with the girl in the advertisement. Tuan does business in the fashion industry and plans to settle down in the US permanently. However, he later decided to return to Vietnam to pursue his love.

As for My Thanh, after graduating from university for a while, the two decided to get married in a happy wedding in 2020. The couple now has a beautiful daughter and supports each other in their business. Sharing about their married life, My Thanh said that she and her husband cannot avoid arguments and quarrels. She understands that her husband is a good person but sometimes he is hot-tempered and has a way of speaking that is not very gentle. As a wife, Thanh wants her husband to be gentle and romantic. "To me, he is a very difficult person, but he is very good at business, loves his wife and children, and is filial to his family," My Thanh said. Nguyen Tuan also admitted that sometimes he feels pressured when his wife quickly wants him to become a perfect father. According to him, no matter what role or task, each person needs time to adapt and improve. The couple also shared that when they encounter problems or disagreements, they often choose to sit down together when they have both calmed down.
