Implementing the National Target Program on socio-economic development of ethnic minority and mountainous areas in the period of 2021-2025, in recent times, localities in Tan Son and Thanh Son districts, where many Muong ethnic people live, have actively promoted propaganda, mobilization, and encouraged people to promote their role and responsibility in preserving and maintaining the culture, customs, and good practices of their people.
Since childhood, being nurtured and raised in the echoes of lullabies, Vi and Rang songs, and the sound of gongs resounding throughout Con village has deeply penetrated the soul and become an indispensable part of the memories and love for national culture of Mrs. Dinh Thi Thanh (born in 1954), Thu Cuc commune, Tan Son district.

With the dream of keeping the fire and soul of Muong culture alive, for over 10 years, Ms. Thanh has spent time traveling to villages, meeting and talking with elders about Muong culture to collect, record and preserve it in the most complete and systematic way. She always encourages, motivates and inspires those who are passionate and love Muong ethnic culture, enthusiastically teaching the younger generation how to play basic gongs, traditional songs and dances of the Muong ethnic group with the desire to preserve and spread these unique cultural values.
Mrs. Thanh is also the only woman in Thu Cuc who plays the role of “master” – the person who guides and practices rituals in folk art performances, in Doi festival and some other customs. Her efforts have contributed to reviving and developing the traditional beauty of the Muong people in Con village and Thu Cuc land.
In recent times, in order to preserve and maintain Muong culture, the People's Committee of Tan Son district has issued specialized resolutions and plans to preserve and develop a number of unique cultural forms of ethnic minorities in the district. At the same time, many synchronous solutions have been implemented to promote traditional cultural forms associated with tourism development, realizing the goal of "Preserving and promoting traditional cultural values, creating momentum for sustainable socio-economic development, developing tourism into a spearhead economic sector". Notably, at the end of 2024, the brocade weaving craft of Muong people in Xuan Dai and Kim Thuong communes was decided by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism to be included in the List of National Intangible Heritage of Traditional Crafts.
Ms. Nga (left) introduces her family's sour meat product.
In the flow of Muong culture, there are not only costumes, songs, dances... but also a unique culinary culture, typically sour meat - a famous dish far and wide.
With the desire to continue and develop sour meat products from a rustic dish into a commodity, in recent years, Ms. Ha Thi Nga, Vo Mieu commune, Thanh Son district, and her mother, Ms. Dinh Thi Mai, have launched sour meat products under the Nga Hop brand.
According to Ms. Nga, in the past, life was difficult, only during Tet, families would slaughter pigs, there was no refrigerator to preserve like now, so Muong people often hung the stove to dry so that it could be kept for a long time without spoiling or made sour meat marinated with rice powder. Later on, when life became more comfortable and convenient, most families no longer kept this habit, only a few people still devotedly preserve and pass on the unique processing method and Ms. Nga's family is one of them.
Ms. Nga shared: The decisive factor that makes Nga Hop sour meat different is the quality of ingredients, spices and the family's own secret recipe. My mother and I attach great importance to choosing ingredients and processing them carefully and meticulously. At first, when we first started producing and selling, my family only had a few orders for consumption in the commune and neighboring communes, but now the orders have been shipped regularly every month to many districts in the province and neighboring provinces, including many customers in An Giang, Ca Mau, Ho Chi Minh City...
To preserve and maintain the unique cultural values of the Muong people, Thanh Son district has implemented the Project "Preserving and promoting the cultural identity of the Muong people and other ethnic minorities in the district for the period 2021-2025". The whole district has over 150 Muong ethnic cultural clubs and ethnic cultural clubs in communes, residential areas, and schools. The district has preserved 634 gongs, 123 other musical instruments, 1,268 costumes, hundreds of traditional stilt houses in the community and many tools, labor, production, and daily life of the Muong people...
It can be seen that the Muong community in the localities in general and those who are passionate about Muong ethnic culture have been contributing to affirming the efforts and determination of the Muong generation here. Together, they have preserved the unique culture of their people, built a cultural life, and developed the economy to make life increasingly prosperous and happy...
