In its latest humanitarian situation report for Ethiopia released on June 9, UNICEF said its Humanitarian Action for Children (HAC) 2023 calls for an emergency funding of $674.3 million to meet the critical humanitarian needs of children, adolescents, women and men in Ethiopia.
This figure includes $50.9 million in funds transferred from 2022, with only $120.4 million of the total appeal received to date, representing just 18% of what is needed to support children and families in saving and sustaining lives.
In the request, the funding dedicated to the response in Northern Ethiopia was budgeted at $255.7 million and was fully included in the HAC.
Another $345.4 million in HAC has been earmarked to respond to the severe drought, which has affected more than 24 million people across four regions, according to UNICEF.
“UNICEF continues to appeal for support to close the remaining funding gap and ensure that children and their caregivers receive life-saving support in 2023 and beyond,” the statement said.
Since the beginning of 2023, UNICEF said it has mobilized $37.7 million for the Northern Ethiopia Response Plan and $33.6 million for drought response.
In the report, UNICEF said heavy rainfall across southern and southeastern Ethiopia has exacerbated flooding in affected areas and continues to lead to displacement, impacting livelihoods and exacerbating the spread of cholera. Meanwhile, northern Ethiopia has been hit hard by conflict.
Accordingly, UNICEF interventions aim to improve the overall quality of health care services across Afar, Amhara and Tigray, supporting the delivery of routine immunization, medical consultation and essential health services.
