Laos will waive visas for Chinese tourists in a bid to attract more tourists from the country.
The visa exemption policy is expected to be announced this month and will only apply in the last 6 months of the year to tourists traveling in groups organized by travel companies.
According to Laotian Times, the Lao government is also considering offering visa-related incentives to visitors from other target markets, including free multiple-entry visas and increasing the length of stay from 30 to 60 days.
China is now one of the top three sources of foreign tourists to Laos since the Covid-19 pandemic. Along with that, the Laos-China railway has also helped Chinese tourists to travel to Laos more conveniently at a lower cost than traveling by road and air.
Since the start of cross-border tourist trains in April 2023, the Laos-China railway has carried more than 172,000 passengers. In the first four months of this year, Laos welcomed more than 1.5 million foreign tourists, of which Chinese tourists accounted for about 20%.
In a recent interview with ASEAN and Chinese media in Vientiane, Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Darany Phommavongsa stressed that the government is currently enhancing road infrastructure in transit areas and improving access to popular tourist destinations such as Vang Vieng in Vientiane province, Kong in Champasack province and other areas across Laos.
