Implementing the assignment of the National Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, from October 30 to November 2, the Steering Committee's working delegation, including representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Standing Office of the Steering Committee, led by Mr. Nguyen Minh Vu, Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, worked with the People's Committees of Ca Mau, Bac Lieu and Kien Giang provinces to inspect the work of natural disaster prevention and control and search and rescue in the localities.

Ca Mau, Bac Lieu and Kien Giang are coastal provinces with long coastlines in the Mekong Delta, which have recently been heavily affected by climate change and unusual weather and natural disasters.

At the working sessions, the Provincial Steering Committees for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue reported on the situation and results of natural disaster prevention and search and rescue work in 2023 in the locality, stating the shortcomings, difficulties and recommendations of the provinces to the Government as well as the National Steering Committee.

On behalf of the working delegation, Assistant Minister Nguyen Minh Vu highly appreciated the efforts and attempts in disaster prevention and control of the three provinces in recent times.

At the same time, in the face of rapid climate change and complex developments of natural disasters, weather and the El Nino phenomenon, the Assistant Minister requested the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of the three provinces to focus on implementing the following tasks during the time:

Improve the capacity of the Standing Office in terms of human resources, facilities, and equipment to meet requirements and tasks. Review, update, and complete disaster response plans, especially plans to respond to strong storms, riverbank and coastal erosion, drought, and saltwater intrusion to avoid being passive when disasters occur. Mobilize resources to install equipment to monitor, supervise, and warn of natural disasters.

Strengthen information and propaganda work to raise public awareness. Speed ​​up the completion of riverbank and coastal erosion treatment projects for which the Prime Minister has decided to allocate funding. Identify key points on sea dykes, embankments, and embankments to be ready to respond when situations arise; deploy collection and effective use, in accordance with regulations, of the Natural Disaster Prevention Fund...

The delegation also noted the proposals and recommendations of the provinces to report to the National Steering Committee on amending relevant legal documents, allocating funds to improve the disaster prevention capacity of the provinces and embanking vulnerable sea and river dykes that are seriously eroded.

In Bac Lieu province, the working group surveyed the East Sea dike, Chien Tup 2 sluice, Nha Mat embankment and the underground embankment line to create sandbanks, and the Nha Mat sluice to prevent high tides.
