Some experts believe that Liu Bei's best strategist was not Zhuge Liang. Instead, Fa Zheng was the number one strategist of the Shu Dynasty.
Fa Zheng (176 - 220), courtesy name Xiao Zhi, from Mi County, Shaanxi today, was one of Liu Bei's outstanding military advisors during the Three Kingdoms period. Some experts believe that Fa Zheng surpassed Zhuge Liang to become Liu Bei's number one military advisor.
According to records, Fa Zheng was originally a subordinate of Liu Zhang, the warlord of Xichuan. Later, when Liu Bei entered Shu and forced Liu Zhang to surrender. Being a smart man, Fa Zheng decided to join Liu Bei's army.
Since following Liu Bei, Fa Zheng used his intelligence to come up with many ingenious strategies to help the monarch have good relations with the wealthy in Yi Province. Thanks to that, Fa Zheng was trusted by Liu Bei, highly regarded, and appointed as the Governor of Shu - General Yang Wu.
Liu Bei also ordered Fa Zheng, along with Zhuge Liang, Liu Ba, Li Yan, and Yi Xi, to create the "Shu Ke" - a set of laws to govern Yi Zhou.
During that time, Fa Zheng was both a high-ranking official under Liu Bei and controlled the administrative power of Shu County.
In the 22nd year of Jian'an (217 AD), Cao Cao, after surrendering to Zhang Lu, did not continue to send troops to attack Yi Province. Instead, Cao Cao ordered Xiahou Yuan and Zhang He to defend Hanzhong.
In that context, Fa Zheng quickly advised Liu Bei, stating that Cao Wei certainly had internal problems and advised the monarch to take over Hanzhong, expanding its territory and influence.
After careful consideration, Liu Bei trusted Fa Zheng and decided to lead his army to attack Hanzhong in 219. During the entire time fighting against Cao Wei's army, Fa Zheng continuously offered many strategies such as "diversion to the east and attack to the west" to help Liu Bei gradually wear down the enemy's forces and finally capture Hanzhong from Cao Cao.
In 220, Fa Zheng passed away at the age of 45. Upon hearing the news of his death, Liu Bei was deeply saddened and mourned. To commemorate his contributions to the Shu Dynasty, Liu Bei appointed Fa Zheng as the Winged Marquis. He became the only high-ranking official to be posthumously awarded a title under Emperor Liu Bei. The photo in this article is for illustrative purposes only.
