Foreign experts share the best time to visit 3 regions of Vietnam to have nice weather, cheap prices and avoid crowds.
Each region of Vietnam has its own appeal in the eyes of international tourists. "The climates of the North and South are different, so Vietnam always has places worth visiting no matter when," said Melissa Matthews, director of Southeast Asia and North America for luxury travel company Red Savannah.

International tourism experts studying the Vietnamese market have divided Vietnam into three seasons: high, mid and low, as well as the best time to visit if you want to avoid crowds, enjoy cheap prices and nature at its best.
Peak season in the North is from September to November and March to April; in the Central region from April to August, and in the South from October to April. Intervals between high and low seasons in the North: from December to February, May to August; in the Central region from September to March; in the South from September to December. Low season: in the North from May to October, in the Central region from September to May, and in the South from May to September.
Not crowded time
Matthews said the rainy season (May-October in the North, September-May in the Central, May-September in the South) would attract fewer tourists.
“There are many perks to coming to Vietnam at this time of year,” Matthews said, thanks to cheap hotel rooms and airfares. Restaurants and tours to popular destinations are less crowded, offering a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture. “You can leisurely enjoy the famous bun cha on a plastic stool on the sidewalk without worrying about the crowds,” one tourist shared.
However, rain and cloudy weather can hamper hiking in Sa Pa or cruising in Ha Long Bay, two experiences that any visitor to Vietnam wants to partake in.
Best time to visit
For tourists who want to visit Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and the Central region, the best time to visit is the dry season. February and March are the best times to travel across Vietnam. February can coincide with the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, so Matthews advises foreign visitors to choose destinations near the sea for vacation and visit big cities after Tet. During Tet, everyone wants to go home to reunite with their families, so shops are less open, according to Matthews.
If you want to explore Hanoi, visit in September-November or March-April because the weather is dry. If you want to experience sunny beaches like Hoi An, Nha Trang, visit in April-August. From October to April next year is the best time to explore the Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc.
Cheap time
International experts rate Vietnam as an "affordable destination all year round", with abundant street food and comfortable hotels that are still suitable for all budgets. To have a budget trip and enjoy the best time, visitors should visit in April, May, October and November. These months have warm weather and fewer tourists.
Best time to visit Sa Pa, Ha Long Bay
A visit to the golden terraced fields in Sa Pa is a must-do for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Matthews notes that the area starts to cool down from December to February, so it’s best to plan your trip from September to November or March to April. The rice harvest season is also a great time to visit: in late August to September, the vibrant green hillsides turn yellow as the rice ripens.
Ha Long Bay is a popular destination for both domestic and international visitors. For a less crowded experience, consider an overnight cruise that takes you deeper into the bay or to the equally beautiful neighboring Lan Ha Bay.
March, April, October and November are ideal months to visit as the weather is warm, sunny and less humid. Visitors also avoid peak season and can enjoy kayaking, hiking on Cat Ba Island, and scuba diving.
Bad weather times
Foreign experts advise tourists to avoid traveling during the monsoon or rainy season. "When the monsoon hits Vietnam, it gets very wet," Matthews said, warning to avoid the mountainous areas of Sa Pa and Ha Long Bay, as storms can make travel unsafe.
If you still decide to travel during the rainy season, you should be flexible in your plans or not book everything in advance due to unpredictable weather. "Keeping an open mind can help you benefit from discounts on tours and rooms during the low season," said Benjamin Kreuz, general manager of Six Senses Ninh Van Bay.
