Artisan Ho Van Dinh - Prestigious village elder of Tra Bui commune (Bac Tra My): Passing on culture to the younger generation

The Ca Dong people in particular and other ethnic minorities living in the mountainous districts of Quang Nam in general have a spirit of solidarity and close attachment. This has been even more evident since the Party and Uncle Ho came into being. The mountain people no longer hate each other, but instead unite together to fight and defeat the invaders.

In particular, since the liberation, the ethnic minorities in Quang Nam have truly seen each other as brothers and sisters under the same roof. No one discriminates against anyone, whether they are Ca Dong, Co, Mo Nong or Xe Dang... whenever they need each other, people are always ready to support and help. Despite the difficult life, the ethnic minority communities living in neighboring mountainous areas know how to share land with each other, provide spiritual and material support when they are sick, ill, have funerals, or get married... That is something to be proud of!

Particularly in Tra Bui, where the Ca Dong people mainly live, community solidarity has always been promoted for generations. Clans help each other with very small tasks such as contributing labor days to farm, clear land, plant acacia trees, build houses, encourage children to go to school and especially promote the preservation of traditional culture. Many cultural teaching classes were conducted by me and artisans in the commune, helping many children of local Ca Dong clans have the opportunity to access and contribute to preserving the good cultural values of their ancestors.

In addition to the commune gong team, in recent years, we have taught many gong clubs and groups to students at schools. This team, after a period of proficiency, has participated in festivals organized by the province, district, and commune.

Recently, we have regularly organized cultural and artistic exchanges between the Ca Dong community in Bac Tra My (Quang Nam) and the Ca Dong community in Tra Bong and Ba To districts (Quang Ngai). This has created conditions to expand the spirit of solidarity between the clans in the two provinces, and helped to resolve conflicts and disputes in the border areas.

Mr. Briu Quan - Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Tay Giang district: Solidarity, preserving the invaluable assets of our ancestors

In recent years, Tay Giang has introduced many cultural and studious clans in the community. Typical are the Colau and Bhơriu clans in Lang and A Xan communes; the Aral clan in A Vuong commune... Promoting the role of clans in building a new life, the Co Tu community in Tay Giang creates solidarity, contributes to preserving traditional cultural values, encourages studious descendants, and sets an example in building bright - green - clean - beautiful residential areas.

In particular, from the national solidarity, the Co Tu clans in Tay Giang have promptly supported and helped members of their clans, as well as other clans who have difficulties with housing, or are sick, lacking livelihood resources... Typically, the households of Mr. Bhơriu Pố, Bhơriu Roon, Bhơriu Thị Lăl, Bhơriu Thị Mé, Cơlâu Nhập, Cơlâu Nghi (in Lang commune); households of Arâl Blư, Arâl Nhỏ, Arâl Lú (A Vương commune) have recently actively supported production land, house building materials, and livestock for households with difficulties and lack of capital in the commune.

The spirit of community solidarity of the clans in Tay Giang district is most clearly seen in the movement to build new rural areas, carry out rural traffic projects, level the resettlement site... creating conditions for the homeland to develop and innovate.

Journalist Alang Nguoc - Head of the Association of Literature and Arts of Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas (Quang Nam Association of Literature and Arts): Tradition of community solidarity

The ethnic minorities in Quang Nam have in common a strong sense of community. Over hundreds of years of survival, they have always promoted the spirit of solidarity, considering it the strength to overcome the hardships of life.

In recent years, the people of the mountainous region have witnessed many meaningful and humane activities demonstrating this spirit. Typical examples include the brotherhood activities between the Co Tu, Ve, and Ta Rieng people in Nam Giang; between the Ca Dong and Xe Dang people in Nam Tra My...
There have been continuous mutual support and assistance activities, helping ethnic minority communities gradually "erase barriers" and live together in harmony.

Living under the protection of Mother Forest, the Co Tu, Ve, Ta Rieng people… no longer distinguish between “you Ve and me Ta Rieng”, thanks to which they have created miracles in the resistance war and even in their new life today. Many conflicts are resolved through cultural stories; in which the historical role, traditional origins and the voice of the village elders are considered as “judges” who give judgments with profound humanistic values.

As for the Co Tu people, since the Party came into being, the most populous ethnic minority community in the border region of Quang Nam has said goodbye to the “blood hunts” (Têng brau). Later, successive reconciliations were carried out, extending the community bond through twinning between villages.

They drank the same water, cultivated together on the fields at the foot of Truong Son mountain range and shared the community story through migration, welcoming brothers from the highlands bordering Vietnam - Laos to live together. In the communes of Dong Giang, for decades now, the Co Tu people have reminded their children and grandchildren about that migration journey, considering it a beautiful example of the tradition of connecting the local community...

Nowadays, when life has changed a lot, the Co Tu people in particular and the ethnic minorities in Quang Nam in general still keep in mind the teachings of their predecessors about the spirit of community solidarity. Overcoming the constraints of history, the young generation in the mountains now freely explore marriage, connect with relatives, and help each other develop their lives under the roof of Truong Son.

Mr. Polong Plenh - Deputy Head of Culture and Information Department of Tay Giang district: Connections without boundaries

The spirit of solidarity of the ethnic minorities in the mountainous areas of Quang Nam in general and the Co Tu people in Tay Giang district in particular was clearly demonstrated through two long-term resistance wars. Listening to the call of the Fatherland, the mountainous people united as one, rose up to fight the enemy, protect the achievements of the revolution, and stay on the land to protect the village.

Living together under the Truong Son roof, that spirit of solidarity was further nurtured and developed continuously. Thousands of households, clans, and mountainous villages in Quang Nam contributed to the revolution. They sheltered soldiers and cadres from the lowlands; they were ready to go on the road carrying food and ammunition to the frontline and directly participated in battles across the mountains, winning victories.

Promoting the spirit of solidarity, today, thousands of ethnic minority households follow the Party's policy and contribute to preserving traditional cultural values. Many traditional mirror, moong, and stilt houses have been restored, creating unique cultural and architectural values, demonstrating the spirit of solidarity of the Co Tu community in particular and the ethnic minorities in the mountainous areas of Quang Nam in general.

Young people in the mountainous areas diligently learn the “fire of the profession” experience from folk culture artisans, passionately craft and perform musical instruments, weave, carve wood... contributing to the story of preserving culture, maintaining traditional beauty, and opening up directions for future tourism development.

The spirit of solidarity is also reflected in the unique and humane “Village Culture” and “Forest Protection Culture” of the ethnic minorities in the mountainous areas, especially the Co Tu people, through the culture of sharing, giving firewood, giving rice... to help the disadvantaged in the village. With their roles and spirit of solidarity, they help each other overcome difficulties, especially during times of natural disasters and epidemics. In recent years, implementing the policy of building new rural areas, thousands of ethnic minority households have volunteered to donate land, crops, houses, plants... to contribute to the renewal of their homeland and village.

Particularly for the Co Tu people in Tay Giang, where there are 8 communes bordering Laos, the spirit of solidarity is not only expressed between the village and commune communities but also the “borderless” connection between the people on both sides of the border. With the motto “Helping friends is helping ourselves”, the community and the Tay Giang government have organized many trips to visit relatives, cooperate, and establish friendship to build a peaceful, friendly and sustainable border area.
