The acquisition of Juniper Networks will help HPE, a nearly century-old technology company, better position itself for the era of artificial intelligence (AI). Sources told the WSJ that the transaction could be announced as early as this week.

HPE is a cloud services provider for a wide range of customers, from small businesses to large organizations and governments. HPE is a division of Hewlett-Packard (HP) – an American technology “icon” founded by William Hewlett and David Packard in 1939.

The current capitalization of HPE and Juniper is nearly 23 billion USD and 9.6 billion USD respectively. Juniper specializes in selling network equipment and services such as routers, switches to customers in the fields of telecommunications, technology, finance, etc. Juniper is also operating the AI business segment - Mist AI, using AI and machine learning to optimize user experience when accessing wireless.

In 2015, HP split into HPE, which specializes in business services, and HP, which sells computers and printers.

The HPE-Juniper deal, if successful, would be one of the largest tech acquisitions in recent memory. Tech M&A has been in a slump amid increased scrutiny of monopolies in Washington.

Another acquisition in the works is software design company Synopsys in talks to acquire Ansys for $35 billion in cash and stock, according to the WSJ .
