Press conference on the results of the 26th meeting of the Central Steering Committee on anti-corruption and negativity

On the afternoon of August 14, the Central Internal Affairs Committee held a press conference to inform about the results of the 26th meeting of the Central Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption and Negativity (Steering Committee), which took place in the morning of the same day, chaired by General Secretary, President, Head of the Steering Committee To Lam.

At the press conference, comrade Nguyen Huu Dong, member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Head of the Central Internal Affairs Commission, provided basic information on the results of the 26th meeting of the Steering Committee.

He emphasized that there were 13 comments at the meeting. The opinions unanimously assessed that in the first 6 months of 2024 and the past time, despite facing many difficulties and challenges, under the leadership and direction of the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and the solidarity, consensus and high determination of the entire Party, people and army, the work of preventing and combating corruption and negativity continued to be promoted, drastically and synchronously at both the central and local levels, with new breakthroughs, contributing to building our Party and State increasingly clean and strong.

According to comrade Nguyen Huu Dong, the Steering Committee has emphasized 7 outstanding results. In particular, it has directed to promote and synchronize the work of inspection, supervision, auditing; strictly handle party organizations and party members who violate the law.

Investigation, prosecution and trial work continues to be directed to be carried out strongly and resolutely; many particularly serious corruption and negative cases involving many ministries, branches and localities are strictly handled in accordance with the motto of "handling one case to alert an entire region and field", "no forbidden areas, no exceptions, regardless of who the person is"; continuing to encourage cadres to strictly accept political responsibility, voluntarily resign, and admit shortcomings when there are violations.

In addition to strictly handling corruption and negative behaviors, attention has been paid to directing the improvement of the effectiveness of implementing solutions. Prevent corruption and negativity; review, amend, supplement, and perfect institutions to make corruption and negativity "impossible"; appraisal, asset valuation, and recovery of corrupt assets are directed with attention and achieved positive results...

A notable new point in the investigation and handling of corruption and negative cases in recent times has been pointed out, that is, from the initial prosecution of economic crimes such as: Tax evasion; violation of bidding regulations; violation of land management and use regulations; violation of state property management and use regulations causing loss and waste, etc., we have resolutely investigated to clarify the nature and prosecuted corruption crimes such as: Taking advantage of positions and powers to influence others for personal gain; taking advantage of positions and powers while performing official duties; taking advantage of influence over people with positions and powers for personal gain; giving bribes; receiving bribes;...

Answering about the results and progress of the trials of some major cases, Major General Hoang Anh Tuyen, Deputy Chief of Office of the Ministry of Public Security, said that the trials of some key cases that the public is very interested in have been completed according to the plan and requirements of the Steering Committee (such as the cases that occurred at FLC Group; Tan Hoang Minh Group, Van Thinh Phat Group Joint Stock Company, SCB Bank), with very strict but also very humane sentences, for the first time, a defendant was sentenced to death for the crime of "Embezzlement of property", in addition, 4 defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment; 17 defendants were given suspended sentences; The case occurred at Tan Hoang Minh Group, among the 15 defendants sentenced to fixed terms of imprisonment, 6 defendants were given suspended sentences... Currently, the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City is holding a first-instance trial of the case that occurred at the Vietnam Register and registration centers in several localities (expected to end on October 18).

The prosecuting agencies promptly detained, seized assets, and froze accounts of great value, such as: In the case that occurred at Phuc Son Group Joint Stock Company, the Investigation Agency temporarily detained a total amount of money and assets of 315.25 billion VND, 1.97 million USD, 534 gold bars and 1,444 Land Use Rights Certificates; in the case that occurred at Xuyen Viet Oil Company, 134 savings books worth more than 1,117 billion VND, 17 land and housing use rights certificates and many other valuable assets were temporarily detained.

Particularly, the cases and incidents under the supervision and direction of the Steering Committee in the first 6 months of 2024 have recovered nearly 7,750 billion VND (an increase of more than 5,650 billion VND compared to the same period in 2023), bringing the total amount recovered since the establishment of the Steering Committee to date to 85,520 billion VND (reaching a rate of 50.75%).

The Central Committee for Internal Affairs recommends that press agencies focus on propagating the Party's directives. In particular, the General Secretary, President, and Head of the Steering Committee emphasized three requirements: Preventing and combating corruption and negativity must serve socio-economic development, not affecting or hindering socio-economic development because of promoting prevention and combating corruption and negativity; preventing and combating corruption and negativity must be deployed to the grassroots party and party cells, and must be supervised by cadres, party members and the people; paying special attention to the work of preventing and combating negativity, especially negative manifestations that are the origin and cause of corruption.
