According to a new report by edtech company upGrad, around 56% of Gen Zers prefer to seek guidance from artificial intelligence (AI) rather than a manager when faced with a difficult task at work. The main reasons are that AI is available 24/7 (66%), provides objective advice (56%), and ensures privacy during sensitive conversations (49%).

The report was based on data from 3,512 Gen Z employees across various industries and 1,128 HR leaders.

The use of artificial intelligence is growing exponentially in the workplace and across generations. For Gen Z, Gen AI is not just a tool but has become an important part of their professional identity.

Nearly three-quarters of Gen Z employees have already integrated Gen AI into their workflows. Many see clear potential in the tool: 77% say Gen AI opens up new opportunities, while 65% are neutral to optimistic about its impact. More than half of Gen Z predict Gen AI will play a central or supporting role in their work within the next five years.

In particular, Gen Z increasingly prefers AI to find solutions that are fast, relevant, and effective. When they need instant answers or personalized solutions, more than half of Gen AI is used over traditional learning sources. 38% rely on the technology to solve complex problems, while a quarter rely on it for convenience when traditional resources are not available.

However, Gen Z uses Gen AI selectively and often privately. About a quarter are willing to share their use of GenAI with colleagues to develop together, while another quarter keep it a secret to avoid being judged. However, half of Gen Z feel comfortable sharing when the context, colleagues, and attitudes toward AI are appropriate.

For Gen Z, GPT outputs typically meet their needs with minimal tweaking. Specifically, 72% of Gen Z employees admit to using AI output with little tweaking, while three-quarters say GPT feedback is sufficient. Additionally, a quarter of Gen Z customize GPT to their own needs to minimize tweaking of output.

The report also found a large gap between Gen Z’s expectations and the current implementation of AI in businesses. For AI to truly be effective, organizations need to develop clear, timely guidance and provide appropriate training.

Currently, 54% of Gen Z employees rate existing training as not good enough, and 52% are unsure about the freshness of training programs, with some even reporting that necessary training is rarely or never provided.
