In the 2024 summer-autumn rice crop, Bac Lieu province planted over 58,800 hectares, concentrated in Phuoc Long, Vinh Loi, Hoa Binh and Hong Dan districts. Currently, farmers in the localities have harvested over 31,000 hectares, with an average yield of 5-7 tons/ha.

Sad to see the rice fall

On September 10, information from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) of Bac Lieu province said that due to the impact of prolonged heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms in recent days, more than 8,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice in the ripening stage have fallen over and been deeply submerged in water. Of which, the area of fallen rice that has not affected the yield is 70 hectares, the area of fallen rice that has affected the yield by less than 30% is 6,150 hectares and from 30-70% is more than 1,800 hectares.

According to a reporter from Kinh te va Do thi newspaper, the rice fields in Minh Dieu commune, Hoa Binh district, have become barren after the rains. To save the rice, local people have to be on duty 24/7 to pump water out of the fields, waiting for the sun to rise so they can bring in the harvesters right away. "The storms have lasted for many days, so the rice has collapsed, this crop's yield is not high," said Mr. Tran Quoc Dung, a local resident.

In Phuoc Long district, many rice fields have been damaged by thunderstorms in recent days. Mr. Nguyen Van Ban, a local farmer, said that when the harvest was near, people here thought that this rice crop would be a bumper crop with high yields. “But the prolonged heavy rains made many people worried because the rice fields collapsed. My family’s 2 hectares of rice fields that were about to be harvested collapsed, reducing yields,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Ban.

According to Mr. Truong Phuoc Hien, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Phuoc Long district, this year's summer-autumn rice crop was planted on an area of over 13,700 hectares, and over 8,000 hectares have been harvested. The current rice price ranges from 8,000 - 8,500 VND/kg, with the ST24 variety having a higher price.

“However, prolonged heavy rains have disrupted the summer-autumn rice harvest. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Phuoc Long district has directed localities to take advantage of favorable weather to quickly harvest to limit damage. Currently, the weather is sunny and good, farmers in the area are speeding up the harvest, even at night,” said Mr. Hien.

Focus on supporting farmers in harvesting

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Lieu province, this year's summer-autumn crop, the province planted more than 58,800 hectares. Currently, the main crop of rice is in the peak harvest stage. Although there are no complete statistics, the recent storms and heavy rains have knocked down and flooded thousands of hectares of summer-autumn rice. Currently, in the rice-growing areas, taking advantage of the good weather, people are using water pumps to harvest.

Mr. To Thanh Hai, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vinh Loi district, said that due to the impact of storms and rains, people's harvest was delayed even though it was the main crop season. As of this morning (September 10), thanks to good sunshine and light winds, people's harvest is being accelerated. According to Mr. Hai, Vinh Loi district currently has nearly 200 combine harvesters, and when the weather is good, 800 - 1,000 hectares can be harvested each day. To support farmers in harvesting rice smoothly and limit damage, the local agricultural sector always closely monitors weather developments and promptly informs people so that they can proactively plan their response.

Mr. Pham Van Muoi, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Lieu province, said that to support farmers in harvesting rice smoothly and minimizing damage, the agricultural sector always closely monitors weather developments and promptly informs people so that they can proactively plan for response in production.

“In addition, we need to regulate water and operate sewer systems to speed up drainage to help people prevent flooding and harvest summer-autumn rice more easily when the rain has decreased. In particular, we need to coordinate with local authorities to monitor the situation of fallen rice and the daily rice harvest progress in localities to promptly resolve difficulties for farmers. The agricultural sector is also actively mobilizing combine harvesters from neighboring localities to operate in the province to support people in speeding up the harvest,” added Mr. Pham Van Muoi.
