The project “Transforming the rice value chain to respond to climate change and sustainable development in the Mekong Delta (TRVC)” is implemented by the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MARD). In the first rice crop, 150 enterprises were approached for the project but only 8 enterprises participated.
Today, March 18, in Can Tho City, the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) held an award ceremony for businesses collaborating with rice farmers within the framework of the Project "Transforming the rice value chain to respond to climate change and sustainable development in the Mekong Delta (TRVC)".

The project is implemented by SNV in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the Department of Agriculture and Environment of the three provinces of An Giang, Dong Thap and An Giang for 5 years (2023 - 2027), with a total reward of up to 57 billion VND (sponsored by the Australian Embassy in Vietnam).
Here, Ms. Tran Thu Ha - Director of the TRVC project said that in the 2024 summer-autumn rice crop (the first crop of the TRVC project), 150 enterprises were approached but only 15 enterprises received registration documents to participate.
Accordingly, the project selected 10 qualified enterprises to participate (total implementation area of nearly 6,166 hectares). However, during the implementation process, 2 enterprises asked to leave.
Ms. Ha emphasized that an international project had 150 businesses approached, but in the end, less than 10% of them participated. The reason is that this is a project with a very new approach and when participating in the implementation, businesses are also assigned a relatively challenging responsibility.
Specifically, in addition to ensuring a minimum profit of 30% for farmers in the context of high material prices and falling rice prices, businesses must also fulfill social and environmental responsibilities, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, gender equality, and integrate people with disabilities, etc.

Ms. Ha said that it is very gratifying that the enterprises participating in the summer-autumn rice crop have achieved important successes. The organization of the award ceremony today is a worthy recognition of the strong commitment of the enterprises to the TRVC project, despite the challenges during the implementation process, and affirms the continuous efforts of the companies in promoting the sustainable development of the rice industry.
According to the results of the 2024 summer-autumn rice crop (verified by an independent unit), the efforts of businesses and farmers have brought positive economic, social and environmental results.
Specifically, in terms of economic efficiency, the average profit achieved by households in Dong Thap was 64%, An Giang was 56% and Kien Giang was 54%. Thus, the profit achieved by households exceeded the expected results (minimum 30%).
In addition to this profit, households also receive bonuses from the project's policy from the enterprise. In particular, there are enterprises that share 95% of the bonuses with households participating in the chain.
In terms of environmental efficiency, the total emission reduction is 27,161.98 tons of CO2 equivalent.
Regarding social efficiency, 100% of participating enterprises practice integrating policies and implementing measures to ensure social equity within the enterprises themselves and in the value chains in the three project provinces.
With the close coordination and support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the functional departments of Dong Thap, An Giang and Kien Giang provinces, and the active participation of businesses and farmers, in the 2024-2025 winter-spring rice crop (2nd crop of the TRVC project), the registered area in the 3 provinces increased 5 times compared to the previous summer-autumn crop, reaching about 33,576 hectares as of March 15, 2025.
Ms. Christie Getman - SNV Country Director said that as an international development organization, SNV is committed to supporting the Government of Vietnam on climate sustainability, especially in the rice sector.
Through the TRVC project, SNV is working to promote the goal of “Project 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030”, helping farmers apply emission-reducing production methods and increase their ability to adapt to climate change.
