Reuters news agency quoted an announcement from the White House confirming that President Donald Trump will sign an executive order requiring the closure of the Department of Education on March 20 (local time), fulfilling an important commitment in his election campaign.
The new order also requires that any programs or activities that receive remaining funds from the Department of Education must not “promote DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) and gender ideology,” according to the White House.
The US president's latest decision is causing a wave of controversy, especially from Democrats in the Senate, the majority of whom do not show agreement with the dissolution of the Department of Education.
During his first term, Mr. Trump also repeatedly called for the dissolution of the Department of Education and proposed closing the department as president but did not receive consensus from Congress.
This term, the White House is trying to quickly close the Department of Education.
Earlier, Mr. Trump directed Education Secretary Linda McMahon to "take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return educational authority to the states; while ensuring the effective and uninterrupted delivery of all services, programs and benefits to the American people."
"American education is being funneled through federal programs and money and supporting irresponsible bureaucrats. This is failing our children, our teachers and our families," he said.
The White House also reported that it has spent more than $3 trillion since the Department of Education was created in 1979 without improving student achievement on standardized test scores.
President Trump's move was immediately opposed by a group of Democratic attorneys general, who filed a lawsuit to prevent Mr. Trump from dissolving the department and stopping the layoffs.
Defenders of the Department of Education argue that “the department is so critical to maintaining educational standards that an immediate shutdown could disrupt tens of billions of dollars in aid to K-12 schools and tuition assistance for college students.”
