Workshop on Protecting Press Copyright in the Digital Environment

On the morning of September 13, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Journalists Association coordinated with the Vietnam Digital Communications Association and the People's Representative Newspaper to organize a workshop on "Protecting press copyright in the digital environment".

Attending the workshop were leaders of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, and Chairman of the Digital Media Association.

Also attending were nearly 200 delegates representing press management agencies, information technology management units, and leaders of newspaper editorial offices, journalists, and central and local press agencies.

In their opening and welcoming speeches at the workshop, the leaders of the Vietnam Journalists Association and the Editor-in-Chief of the People's Representative Newspaper affirmed that the 4.0 revolution has brought about major changes in technology, changing both journalism technology and reader behavior. In that context, the press has no other choice but to digitally transform to survive and develop. Thanks to digital transformation, many press agencies are becoming more professional, humane, and modern.

However, the digital transformation of journalism also faces many difficulties, especially copyright issues in the digital environment, requiring effective protection solutions, especially technological solutions and perfecting the legal corridor"... At the same time, protecting copyright will promote creativity and motivate journalists and press agencies to invest in content development projects and journalism innovation projects.

Protecting press copyright is a prerequisite for protecting the financial resources of press agencies as well as effectively implementing digital content business models, contributing to solving the current economic problem of press and media.

Currently, in the digital age, the issue of copyright of press works faces many new challenges. Copyright infringement of digital content is widespread at a high speed, with increasingly serious and complex nature and scope. This affects the revenue, reputation, and brand of press agencies as well as the digital transformation of press. Therefore, copyright protection is an urgent issue for press agencies and requires comprehensive and synchronous solutions to achieve the highest efficiency.

At the workshop, delegates focused on discussing the legal, scientific and practical basis for the role of press copyright protection in the digital age; clarifying the current situation of copyright infringement of press works, especially the situation of digital copyright exploitation. Proposing effective solutions to protect press copyright, especially in the digital environment; improving the capacity to protect and exploit press copyright in the 4.0 era for newsrooms and journalists.

At the same time, delegates focused on contributing ideas to the process of amending the Press Law, shaping the relationship between multinational digital platforms and the press in protecting and distributing copyright of digital press content...

According to Decision No. 348/QD-TTg dated April 6, 2023 of the Government approving the Strategy "Digital transformation of journalism to 2025, with a vision to 2030", the goal is set for all press agencies to put content on digital platforms.

Accordingly, by 2030, 100% of press agencies will put content on digital platforms (prioritizing domestic digital platforms). 90% of press agencies will use centralized data analysis and processing platforms, applying artificial intelligence to optimize operations. 100% of press agencies will operate a converged newsroom model and models suitable for the development of advanced science and technology in the world, producing content according to digital journalism trends. Press agencies will optimize revenue sources, of which 50% of press agencies will increase revenue by at least 20%.

To achieve the above goals, the Strategy sets out key tasks and solutions, such as: Raising awareness, strengthening propaganda; reviewing and perfecting legal regulations; developing digital press products; developing digital platforms; developing and improving the quality of human resources; strengthening cooperation and learning from the experiences of countries with strong digital press development...

The workshop "Protecting press copyright in the digital environment" aims to clarify the current situation of copyright infringement of press works; at the same time, discuss and find effective solutions to protect press copyright, especially in the digital environment. The workshop also aims to improve the capacity to protect and exploit press copyright in the digital age for editorial offices and journalists; at the same time, contribute to the process of perfecting the legal framework on copyright.

Within the framework of the workshop, a signing ceremony of a cooperation agreement between the Vietnam Journalists Association and the Vietnam Digital Communications Association also took place on "Improving capacity and knowledge of copyright law enforcement, disseminating knowledge and cultural ethics of press agencies in enforcing copyright protection of press works".
