Conference on 50 years of Vietnamese literature from 1975 to present

(CLO) On November 27, in Hanoi, the theoretical and critical conference "50 years of Vietnamese literature since 1975: Achievements and trends" took place, providing a general and in-depth view of the achievements over the past 50 years and the trends of Vietnamese literature in a new era.

The conference was organized by the Vietnam Writers Association in collaboration with the Central Council for Literature and Arts Theory and Criticism and the Education Publishing House. The conference received 43 presentations, providing both a general and in-depth view of the achievements of Vietnamese literature over the past 50 years and the trends of Vietnamese literature in the new era.

In his opening speech, poet Nguyen Quang Thieu - Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association emphasized that the conference provided a scientific, historical, and summary view as well as outlined a picture of Vietnamese literature in the coming decades of the country.

The delegates identified: Vietnamese literature after 1975 exists and develops in a new historical, cultural and social context. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the socialist system in Eastern Europe, globalization and market economy, the explosion of science and technology, the Internet and modern communications have created a new face of the contemporary era. These are factors that have a profound impact on Vietnamese social life, culture and literature.

"The literary Renovation movement that took place in the mid-1980s and continued to expand later witnessed the emergence of a team of talented writers. In prose, there were Bao Ninh, Nguyen Khac Truong, Le Minh Khue, Ho Anh Thai, Nguyen Viet Ha, Nguyen Binh Phuong... In poetry, there were Duong Kieu Minh, Nguyen Luong Ngoc, Nguyen Quang Thieu, Tran Quang Quy, Inrasara... In drama, there were Luu Quang Vu, Xuan Trinh...", said poet Nguyen Quang Thieu.

In an environment of expanded social democracy, where the creative freedom of artists is respected, post-1975 literature has attempted to portray life in a multidimensional manner with many bold artistic innovations. Thanks to that, contemporary Vietnamese literature is diverse in trends and writing styles, rich in artistic style and tone. In the field of theory and criticism, the awareness of innovation in research thinking and efforts to modernize theory and criticism have helped to improve the life of theory and criticism.

Sharing about the development orientation of literature in the new period, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen The Ky, Chairman of the Central Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts, said that it is necessary to strengthen the innovation of awareness about the nature and characteristics of literature and art, the role and mission of literary theory and criticism on the basis of Marxist-Leninist aesthetics, the Party's literary and artistic line, Ho Chi Minh's thought, harmoniously combining the inheritance of the quintessence of national literature and the absorption of the quintessence of human culture.

Mr. Nguyen The Ky suggested that it is necessary to take care of developing and nurturing the team, focusing on discovering talents, respecting the freedom of creativity, encouraging the exploration and innovation of theorists and critics. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen international cooperation and exchange, focusing on "input" and "output" in receiving and promoting literature, considering this an effective way for Vietnamese literature to effectively reach out to the world.

Also at the conference, writer Nguyen Binh Phuong said that after the Party initiated the Renovation, literature has rapidly changed according to "social temperature".

According to writer Nguyen Binh Phuong, literature began to be divided into sections that corresponded quite well with the reality of life, where the mark of innovation and exploration in the form of expression was undeniable. With its natural conscience, literature half a century after the country's reunification, both diligently mended the wounds and tears of humanity, and gradually led humanity forward in the light of optimism.

Throughout the conference, delegates pointed out a number of limitations such as: Lack of proportion between quantity and quality, more published works but still modest in quality; the negative side of the market economy and the differentiation and changes in reception tastes have a significant impact on literary life; the absorption of the influence of modern literature and art from the world is sometimes not selective, still imitative, hybrid...

At the same time, the conference also emphasized a number of solutions for literary development: Paying attention to and investing in writers; expanding international cultural exchanges to further promote the integration process, helping Vietnamese literature quickly catch up with the thinking and rhythm of modern world art; promoting the development of literary theory and criticism for the sake of theory and criticism.
