"Open space" for outstanding high school students

According to a special mechanism, Hanoi National University has allowed high school students to register in advance for some courses of the university training program, initially applied to affiliated specialized schools, but now expanded to students of affiliated high schools and students of specialized high schools nationwide.

Students can register from the second semester of grade 11, if they have achieved excellent or better results in the previous semester. Their academic results are preserved, and they are exempted from credits if they are later admitted to member schools and faculties of Hanoi National University. To date, nearly 50 students from the High School for Social Sciences and Humanities and the High School for Natural Sciences have registered to study this program.

According to information from Mr. Vu Hai Quan - Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University at the Annual Conference at the end of 2023. In 2024, Ho Chi Minh City National University will recognize university credits for a number of outstanding high school students. They will study a number of basic subjects on the Ho Chi Minh City National University platform in a combination of online and in-person methods in 2024.

This form will be applied to high school students with outstanding talents, not only for students from specialized and gifted schools.

This model has been implemented by many major universities in the world. For example, at Tsinghua University, China, special talents can study from the age of 13, 14, graduate from university at 16 - 18, and graduate with a doctorate at 20.

If this project is implemented, it will open up opportunities for outstanding and talented students to access higher education earlier. More importantly, it will help students orient their careers. At the same time, this form can shorten the university study time by up to 1 year.

In line with the general trend of the world

After the monitoring process, most students who took the pre-university program were enthusiastic, diligent and made rapid progress. Parents whose children took this program were also very satisfied and supportive. To date, a student from the School of Social Sciences and Humanities has accumulated 30/130 university credits. With the current progress, this student can graduate from university in 2 years.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Education and Training advocates building subjects in the direction of specialized topics, helping students accumulate credits to shorten their university study time. This is also a step in line with the general trend of the world. For example, in Australia, the education program allows students to register for a number of credits while preparing to enroll in university.

The regulation allowing high school students to study university programs in advance is in line with the trend.

Building a program and allowing students to register for some credits will help students access the university program early and shorten their study time. Students may only be able to study some credits in the general program (general) and not in their major. For example, high school students with good learning ability can study some subjects such as History of World Civilization, History of the Communist Party of Vietnam, etc. in the History major at the university level.

By taking college credits early, students have the opportunity to access and understand more about higher education. This exposure helps students feel suitable and motivated to continue to the university they want. If they feel it is not suitable, students can completely choose another path, major or university.

The pilot project for high school students to study university programs in advance is a good policy, consistent with the model and general trend of the world because if we want to have an open education, that education must be flexible and adaptable.
