Expanding separate exams, reducing admission based on high school graduation exam scores

Discussing the plan to implement the university entrance exam in 2024, Mr. Nguyen Tien Thao - Director of the Examination Center, Hanoi National University said that the Hanoi National University's 2024 HSA is expected to have 6 rounds, organized in 10 provinces and cities across the country. Previously, in 2023, nearly 70 training institutions used the exam results of Hanoi National University in the university admission method.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology has also announced the schedule of 6 Thinking Assessment (TSA) exams in 2024. The Thinking Assessment exams will be held in 8 localities including Hanoi, Hung Yen, Nam Dinh, Hai Phong, Thai Nguyen, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Da Nang.

In addition, some universities have announced their 2024 university admission plans in the direction of reducing admission based on high school graduation exam scores. In 2024, the National Economics University will allocate about 18% of its quota for admission based on high school graduation exam scores (down 7% compared to 2023), combined admission will increase to 80%, and direct admission will increase to 2%.

According to Dr. To Van Phuong - Head of Training Department of Nha Trang University, the school's 2024 enrollment method will maintain 4 stable admission methods, including: Considering high school transcripts, using the results of the National University's capacity assessment exam, considering high school graduation exam results and direct admission.

From 2025, Nha Trang University will stop using high school graduation exam scores for admission, instead considering a combination of academic records and using competency assessment exam scores.

Expanding scholarship and tuition incentives: Untying "bottlenecks" for difficult majors

Some universities have pioneering policies to expand scholarship and tuition incentives in the 2024 university admission plan. For Hong Bang International University (HIU), the school plans to innovate its tuition and scholarship policies to share difficulties with parents and students. Accordingly, students studying 22 potential majors of the school will receive a 100% scholarship for the first semester tuition. In addition, this university also builds many solutions to reduce the tuition burden for students such as the policy of paying tuition in 3 semesters, paying tuition monthly with 0% interest rate applied throughout the entire course.

In addition, some schools also offer many scholarships to students in basic sciences. Hanoi National University is piloting scholarships for students in basic sciences at the University of Natural Sciences and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Some supported majors include: Talented Mathematics/Physics/Chemistry/Biology, Geology, Water Resources and Environment, Oceanography and Nuclear Engineering Technology. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is piloting support for 9 majors: Han Nom, History, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Political Science, Anthropology, Vietnamese Studies, Linguistics and Literature.

In addition, from January 1, 2024, students studying health majors such as psychiatry, pathology, forensic medicine, forensic psychiatry, infectious diseases and emergency resuscitation will receive full tuition and living expenses support from the State during the entire course according to the Law on Medical Examination and Treatment 2023.

Students studying at private health training institutions are also supported with tuition fees and living expenses for the entire course corresponding to the above-mentioned levels. The State encourages schools and individuals to grant scholarships or subsidies to students studying in these fields.

According to Article 15 of Decree 81/2021/ND-CP, the majors exempted from tuition fees for students include: Ho Chi Minh Thought, Marxism - Leninism, Tuberculosis, Leprosy, Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Forensic Examination, Pathology at public training institutions according to the State's order quota.

In addition to the above majors, students studying in the admission system, ethnic minorities with parents or grandparents from poor or near-poor households are also exempted from tuition fees. Ethnic minorities with small populations according to regulations include: Pu Peo, Cong, Mang, Si La, Bo Y, Co Lao, La Ha, O Du, Ngai, Chut, Brau, Ro Mam, Lu, Pa Then, La Hu, Lo Lo.
