DNO - On September 25, at Mr. Thieu Song's farm in Dong Lam village, Hoa Phu commune (Hoa Vang district), the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Da Nang city, the Center for Biodiversity Conservation of Green Viet (Green Viet) coordinated with the People's Committee of Hoa Phu commune to organize a launching ceremony to plant 15.07 hectares of large timber forest from 25,539 seedlings sponsored by EcoCulture Organization, approved by the People's Committee of Da Nang city to receive the sponsored project in Decision No. 331/QD-UBND dated February 7, 2024.

Accordingly, the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Da Nang City and the Center for Biodiversity Conservation of Green Viet (Green Viet) handed over 20,539 seedlings of the following species: black star, red sưa, flower lat, giang huong and green lim and 100 scattered trees to people in Hoa Phu commune to convert crops from cajuput trees to large timber forests, covering bare hills with green.

In addition, Green Viet supports tree planting and care techniques, helping people develop production forests and forestry economy on their swidden fields, combining sustainable ecotourism development, planting medicinal plants under the forest canopy, developing garden-forest models...

Converting production forests from acacia to large timber trees helps limit negative impacts on the ground layer, such as: erosion, landslides... and contributes to improving the environment.

Mr. Thieu Song, a resident of Dong Lam village, Hoa Phu commune, said that with the encouragement of the local government and the support of the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Da Nang city and Green Viet, his family has converted to planting large timber forests in the sloping fields, and at the foot of the hill, planting acacia trees with fast growth rate to make "soft retaining walls", not only contributing to preventing landslides, protecting the production area and property of the state and people below, but also "taking short-term to support long-term", increasing economic value and efficiency.

According to Vice Chairman of Hoa Phu Commune People's Committee Huynh Tan Sinh, after 5 years of mobilizing people to convert crops, in Hoa Phu commune, about 200 hectares of production forests have been converted from acacia to large timber trees.

Over time, it has been shown that native tree species such as black star, flower lat... grow well. Although the planting of large timber trees has just begun and has not brought economic benefits, in the long term it will be a sustainable development direction for local forestry.

Mr. Thai Van Quang, representative of the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Da Nang City, suggested that units and localities need to pay attention to tree planting and care techniques to ensure socio-economic and environmental efficiency, contributing to responding to natural disasters and climate change.

Planting large timber forests with native seedlings has a long harvest cycle of 15-20 years, but will bring great economic and livelihood benefits, and also help limit erosion, leaching and landslides, so it is necessary to replicate the model of planting large timber trees to replace acacia and cajuput trees.

Previously, in 2023, with the sponsorship of EcoCulture Organization, the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Da Nang City and Green Viet coordinated with local authorities to transfer and support techniques for planting 20,000 trees of large timber species to households in Hoa Lien commune (Hoa Vang district) to plant 18.1 hectares of forest, contributing to preventing erosion, landslides and protecting the environment and ecology, towards the Government's goal of planting 1 billion trees in the 2021-2025 period.
