The Sony a9 III is the first full-frame interchangeable-lens camera to incorporate a global shutter image sensor.
It features full-range shutter technology - delivering a maximum speed of up to 120 frames per second without blackouts or distortion. With real-time recognition autofocus using a dedicated AI processor, this camera is designed for high-speed action photography.
The camera comes with an impressive new shooting speed (1/80,000 second), although the shutter speed is limited to “just” 1/16,000 second when shooting continuously. The switch to a global shutter sensor is also a big boon for flash photography, allowing flash synchronization at any shutter speed.
The EVF is designed to match the sensor and super-fast processor – ensuring blackout-free shooting even at 120fps, meaning the EVF refreshes at 120Hz. It’s powered by the Bionz XR processor, which promises 8x the processing power of the a9 Mark II.
In addition, the manufacturer also introduced to users the Pre-Capture feature - allowing photographers to record the moment before they fully press the shutter button. This mode operates at a speed of up to 120 frames per second, so the camera will continuously record images for up to a full second. After pressing the shutter button, the a9 III will record the previous second moment.
Additionally, the manufacturer claims that the camera's autofocus and subject recognition capabilities are the best ever, with some AF parameters remaining the same. The autofocus points cover 95.6% of the image sensor, and the camera promises autofocus down to -5 EV.
The A9 III boasts 6K oversampling for 4K/60p video and uncropped 4K/120p. The camera promises 10-bit 4:2:2 All-I, 16-bit RAW output, S-Cinetone and S-Log3, along with dynamic mode stabilization.
The camera features a 3.2-inch 4-axis LCD with 2,095K dots and a wide color gamut (DCI-P3). The Sony a9 III will be available next spring for $5,999.
