South Korea funds over 13 billion won to improve railway safety management capacity

This morning (December 4), in Hanoi, Vietnam Railway Corporation coordinated with the Korean Contractor Consortium to organize the Closing Ceremony of the Project "Improving Railway Safety Management Capacity in Vietnam" funded by Korea.


In his opening speech, Mr. Yun Yoo Duk, Director of the International Cooperation Center, Korea Institute of Technology Development, said that the project "Improving railway safety management capacity in Vietnam" was implemented within the framework of cooperation between the Vietnamese Government and the Korean Government with the aim of supporting Vietnam in implementing the National Railway Network Plan to 2030.

Since 2022, the Korean Government has implemented many practical programs to improve Vietnam's railway safety management capacity through ODA projects.

Mr. Jun Yoo Duk, Director of the International Cooperation Center (Korea Institute of Technology Development) and Mr. Tran Anh Tuan, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Railways Corporation signed the minutes of handover of project results.

"We hope that through this project, the two countries can expand mutually beneficial investment and technology cooperation through high-speed rail and transportation services to promote the development of Vietnam's railway industry," said Mr. Yun Yoo Duk.

Sharing more, Mr. Hoang Gia Khanh, General Director of Vietnam Railway Corporation, said that through the support of Government agencies such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Korea, the Korea International Cooperation Agency and enterprises such as Korea Railway Corporation, Seoul Metro, Vietnam Railway Corporation has sent 167 trainees to attend training courses in Korea on railway policy and management, urban railway operation and advanced railway operation.

After completing the training program, the trainees applied the acquired knowledge to their work in a practical and effective way, actively contributing to the development process of Vietnam Railways Corporation.

For the project "Improving railway safety management capacity in Vietnam", the Korean Government has provided non-refundable funding worth 13.5 billion Won. Through this project, Vietnam Railway Corporation has been provided with useful equipment for the repair and maintenance of railway infrastructure, thereby making an important contribution to ensuring and improving train safety.

In addition, 6 training courses for 300 trainees of the corporation were held at the Railway College, helping to equip trainees with knowledge on railway design and construction, detecting defects and deviations of the track, rail welding and grinding, rail safety and maintenance. In addition, Vietnamese trainees attended 5 training courses in Korea.

Representatives of the Vietnam Railway Corporation, Korea Railway Corporation and Dongyang University (Korea) signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation.

Mr. Kwon Se Gon, Project Director (Korea Railroad Corporation) said that the project is implemented with two objectives: Strengthening Vietnam's railway safety management capacity by building an advanced railway maintenance system and fostering specialized human resources. Thereby promoting friendship in the railway sector between Korea and Vietnam and cooperation in related industries.

To achieve this goal, the project implementing units have supported railway inspection and maintenance equipment developed by the Korea Railroad Corporation and units in the Korean railway industry, and used the provided equipment in railway maintenance and renovation work in Vietnam.

"Through this project, we expect to enhance Vietnam's railway safety management capacity, reduce railway infrastructure maintenance costs, reduce human and property damage caused by derailment accidents, and foster qualified human resources for railway management and operation in the future," said Mr. Kwon Se Gon.
