On July 31, the Hamas Islamic movement issued a statement saying that leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in the Iranian capital Tehran.
On the same day, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed that Hamas leader Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed after his residence in Tehran was attacked.
Currently, no individual or organization has admitted to being behind the above incident.
The IRGC said the attack occurred in the early hours of July 31. The force is investigating the cause. On July 30, Mr. Haniyeh attended the inauguration of the new Iranian president and met with Iran's supreme leader. Hamas political department member Musa Abu Marzuk said the assassination of leader Ismail Haniyeh "was a cowardly act and there will be a satisfactory answer."
Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas strongly condemned the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, calling it a cowardly act and a serious escalation. Mr. Abbas called on the Palestinian people and forces to be patient and resolute in their resistance to the Israeli occupation.
The Israeli military and the White House have not commented on Haniyeh's death. News of Haniyeh's death comes less than 24 hours after Israel announced it had killed the Hezbollah commander it said was behind a deadly attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
