(NLDO) - How to attract foreign stars to Vietnam is still a difficult problem to solve.

Wherever Taylor Swift goes, she wins in sales

The 4th Ho Chi Minh City International Music Festival - Ho Do 2024 (HOZO 2024) welcomed 200,000 audiences to immerse themselves in the festival atmosphere. Not only providing a top-notch music space, the event has grown to become a global cultural intersection, portraying the image of Ho Chi Minh City as a proud new cultural symbol, while affirming the city's solid position on the regional cultural and artistic map.

Ho Do is currently an international community music event in Vietnam, standing out with its spirit of dedication as it is completely free for the audience.

For three consecutive days, the festival took place vibrantly with two stages operating at full capacity in parallel, gathering more than 250 talented artists from all over the world, spanning from Vietnam to Asia, Africa, Europe and America.

The spread of HOZO over the years has partly proven that Vietnam is an ideal destination. In the era of a flat world, without any barriers, Vietnamese audiences are increasingly eager to enjoy magnificent world music parties.

The music group BlackPink also created an irresistible fever when they came to Hanoi (Vietnam).

However, inviting foreign stars to perform in Vietnam is still a difficult problem. Recently, at the 2024 summary meeting of the Vietnam Center for Music Copyright Protection (VCPMC), VCPMC said that the royalties collected in 2024 were less than in 2023 because many shows/stage performances have not paid royalties for a long time.

"Recently, some Korean music programs have not paid royalties and VCPMC has filed a lawsuit with a competent court, such as the program "2024 Baekhyun Asia Tour (Lonsdaleite) in Ho Chi Minh" (which took place on September 28, 2024) organized by IME Music Company Limited. In addition, the upcoming program also organized by IME Company, "2024-25 2NE1 Asia Tour (Welcome back) in Ho Chi Minh" (which will take place on February 15 and 16, 2025 at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center) has not agreed on paying royalties" - VCPMC said.

"VCPMC has notified and worked with the Korean copyright organization KOMCA to coordinate in handling and preventing infringement, requiring the organizing unit to pay royalties for permission to use, and at the same time reporting the violations of these units to the competent state agency to request inspection and handling of violations" - Meritorious Artist Dinh Trung Can (General Director of VCPMC) informed.

However, the company named IME also expressed its indignation. Accordingly, IME affirmed that VCPMC's way of collecting copyright was completely unreasonable. That is the reason why IME cannot pay copyright, not because it does not want to pay or does not respect copyright issues.

Ho Chi Minh City also had a successful HOZO 2024 season

In addition to legal disagreements, inviting foreign stars to Vietnam still makes organizers "hesitant". Although foreign stars' shows in Vietnam always attract tens of thousands of spectators, such as the band Imagine Dragons with their "top-notch" performances. Or the BlackPink show brought in record revenue of more than 300 billion VND.

In Blackpink’s Asian tours, Hanoi is the 6th highest-grossing leg, higher than Korea, Japan and China. Blackpink’s two concert nights at My Dinh National Stadium sold 67,443 tickets, with a 100% occupancy rate. Total revenue was nearly 13.7 million USD (equivalent to more than 331 billion VND).

Experts confirm: "This is a "dreamy and inspiring" revenue level for those in the industry. Although there is no professional statistical unit, the above figure is likely to be a record high in the history of organizing entertainment events in Vietnam. This shows that the spending power of the market is very large and the audience is only waiting for famous names, receiving much love, and professional organizing units".

However, whether this can be repeated or not is still an unanswered question. Vietnamese fans spend money to go to Thailand and Singapore to see Korean groups BlackPink or Taylor Swift. In 2024, Thailand will welcome a series of world and regional A-list artists, from Harry Styles, Arctic Monkeys, the 1975 to Blackpink and soon Cardi B, Sam Smith, Bruno Major or DJ Marlo.

These concerts attract from 15,000 to nearly 100,000 spectators. On average, every week in the Land of the Golden Temple, there are seasonal music festivals that attract a large number of both domestic audiences and foreign tourists. Many famous names in the world such as Coldplay, Muse, HONNE, Blur or Kendrick Lamar... have announced this year's Asian tour, with destinations such as Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Taiwan (China), Hong Kong (China), South Korea, Malaysia or the Philippines.

Many markets in Asia are bustling with a series of music festivals, along with the appearance of the world's top artists... but in Vietnam, "international music festivals" are still a luxury concept.

Apart from the fact that foreign stars offer quite high performance fees, the biggest obstacle that prevents Vietnam from being on the list of choices for foreign stars is that it "cannot meet the requirements". These are the requirements for technical quality standards (sound, lighting) and also commitments on the number of viewers.

But attracting foreign stars to Vietnam is still a difficult problem to solve.

With what Vietnamese audiences have seen from the organization of the two shows "Anh trai vuon ngan cong gai" and "Anh trai say hi", it is easy for Vietnamese show organizers to meet the requirements of foreign stars. Extremely international stages will not only satisfy the audience but also the customers (foreign stars). However, commitments on the number of audiences (usually over tens of thousands) are quite a complicated issue. Because, to have an international stage, the most important thing is money. And when investing too much, ticket prices must increase.

Production units and show organizers are feeling very excited about the wave of money spent on tickets to watch live concerts (especially the two shows "Anh trai say hi" and "Anh trai vuon ngan cong gai") by Vietnamese audiences.

However, the willingness to spend money to hunt for tickets comes from the fans' fighting spirit and their overwhelming love for their idols of the two shows. Meanwhile, with the usual mindset of buying tickets to see music, especially with the sky-high ticket prices, I'm afraid it will be difficult.

Many organizers have closed after a show that invited foreign stars to perform. In order to please the foreign stars, the organizers had to open their doors close to the show time to fill the empty seats. The loss made the organizers reluctant.

Audiences expect a truly professional development programming industry instead of a fluke.

It can be seen that Vietnam is rarely a choice for international artists to "land" even though the fan community of USUK, K-Pop idols... is not inferior to other countries.

Despite great efforts to bring foreign idols to Vietnam, show cancellation scandals still occur frequently, leaving fans who have invested and waited disappointed with the organization.

This is the reason that affects the reputation of the Vietnamese music market, the audience's psychology, and the psychology of other international stars, making them consider carefully when choosing Vietnam as their destination.
