According to Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association Nguyen Quang Thieu, Professor and writer Mai Quoc Lien passed away at 1:05 a.m. on March 10 at Thong Nhat Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City due to old age, stroke and acute pneumonia. He was 85 years old.
His coffin will lie in state at the Southern National Funeral Home. The visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. the same day until 2:30 p.m. on March 12, after which his coffin will be cremated at the Binh Hung Hoa Cremation Center.
Professor, writer, critic Mai Quoc Lien was born on June 8, 1941 in Dien Phuoc commune, Dien Ban district, Quang Nam province. He has been a member of the Vietnam Writers Association since 1981.
Mai Quoc Lien graduated from the University of Literature (Hanoi University of General Sciences), the University of Sinology, Master of Sinology (Vietnam Social Sciences Committee), and PhD in Literature.

During his career, he held the following positions: Director of the National Studies Center; Editor-in-Chief of Hon Viet Magazine; Member of the Central Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Art, Vice Chairman of the Council for Theory and Criticism of the Vietnam Writers' Association; Member of the Executive Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers' Association; Member of the Council for Professors in Literature; Member of the Ho Chi Minh Prize Council.
He has participated in seminars and research activities in many countries such as the US, China, Russia, France, Italy...

He was awarded the State Prize for Literature and Arts and the State Prize for Science and Technology.
Poet Nguyen Quang Thieu commented that Mai Quoc Lien has research works of great value for current and future research and teaching careers. He is an example in both research and lifestyle, working with an extremely strict and scientific spirit.
"The professor is also a steadfast person in his views on the country's academic and literary issues. The spirit of fighting for the truth that he chooses and pursues never changes," said the Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association.
