Professor Yoshua Bengio, one of the scientists who laid the foundation for the development of artificial intelligence (AI), shared about "AI Safety" within the framework of the high-level technology workshop "Safe AI - Shaping Responsible Innovation" on the afternoon of December 5 in Hanoi.

Within the framework of the event, Professor Yoshua Bengio had a dialogue on “Responsible AI and the importance of AI in education”, witnessing the launching ceremony of the AI Ethics Committee under the Vietnam Association of Software and Information Technology Services (VINASA).

Professor Yoshua Bengio believes that the most important thing is that technological development must go hand in hand with the protection of human rights and the sustainable development of society. AI is developing rapidly, the efficiency of data use has increased by 30%, algorithm performance has tripled, investment in this field has reached an average of 100 billion USD/year, and standard assessments show that AI capacity has surpassed human ability in mastering language and processing data.

But this rapid progress raises troubling questions about the ability to control AI systems that are smarter than humans. Against this backdrop, a major ethical question arises: Who gets to decide the goals of AI? The urgency to understand and act appropriately is not only a responsibility, but also a matter of survival for humanity’s future.

One of the important principles put forward by Professor Yoshua Bengio is that AI needs to be built as a tool to serve humans, not as "agents" capable of setting their own goals and acting to achieve those goals, because AI's goals may conflict with or go beyond the original human intentions.

Therefore, according to Professor Yoshua Bengio, we should avoid designing "survival instincts" for AI systems. That means we should not design AI systems that are like humans, with emotions, appearance, and even consciousness, self-determination, and autonomy.

A 2023 report on the Future of Labor by the World Economic Forum said that by 2025, AI is expected to create 12 million new jobs globally. Another study by McKinsey also found that AI could contribute to the creation of 20 million to 50 million new jobs worldwide by 2030.

According to FPT Corporation Chairman Truong Gia Binh, AI should be seen as an “ally” rather than a threat that takes away jobs. Learning and applying AI is extremely important to stay competitive in the labor market; including basic understanding of AI, machine learning, data science, as well as problem-solving and analytical skills to work effectively with AI systems.

Also within the framework of the workshop, VINASA announced the establishment of the Artificial Intelligence Ethics Committee. The event was witnessed by Professor Yoshua Bengio (Université de Montréal and Mila Institute), VINASA leaders, and leaders of several VINASA member companies.

The establishment of the Artificial Intelligence Ethics Committee demonstrates Vietnam's efforts in building an AI ecosystem where innovation is developed within an ethical framework, ensuring global competitiveness and protecting social values.

The Committee is tasked with guiding Vietnam's AI development roadmap, ensuring that AI is deployed ethically, innovatively and for social benefit, and promoting a favorable legal environment for AI.

Professor Yoshua Bengio is one of the most influential people globally in creating the foundation for AI to become a practical technology, widely applied in fields such as natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, machine learning and robotics. In 1993, he founded the Mila AI Research Institute, which contributed significantly to making Montreal (Canada) a global center for deep learning technology.
