Solving the problem of rote learning and forced learning before entering grade 1

How to solve this problem, so that the pre-primary stage is truly happy for each child? Because "forcing things will make them awkward", taking extra classes early before entering grade 1 but the child does not understand, just learns by rote, forced learning makes it difficult to have a love for learning.

One of the solutions is the Happy Pre-Primary School program of the non-profit educational project "Happy Home School". Today (June 1), the closing ceremony took place, marking one year of implementing this program.

Ms. Thuy Lien, a mother of two primary school children, is the author of the Happy Pre-Primary School program. This program is implemented in 7 private preschools in Ho Chi Minh City.

Ms. Thuy Lien said that with the Happy Pre-Primary School program, 5-6 year old preschoolers are introduced to the method of exploring concepts and learning through doing, helping them approach writing, spelling, and math in a thoughtful way instead of learning the alphabet or spelling mechanically. From there, a happy educational environment from home to school is created for children so that they can learn happily from an early age, contributing to reducing the alarming situation of rote learning, fear of learning, and boredom with learning.

During the learning process, children and preschool teachers together make very cute "textbooks" for 5-6 year old children.

At the same time, the author of the Happy Pre-Primary School program said that in the past, with only 2 squared notebooks, pencils, colored pens, rulers, and boards - familiar learning tools that children need to use regularly when entering grade 1 - children were able to apply all their skills to make their own products.

These are very cute "textbooks" for preschool children. With cheerful pictures, suitable for their age, these special "textbooks" become learning materials for preschool children in the next grade. From then on, schools and families are not burdened with the cost of learning materials.

As of June 1, the Happy Pre-Primary School program has "harvested" 86 "textbooks" made by 5-6 year old children under the scientific and specific guidance of preschool teachers. Each book is a separate copy, reflecting the personality of each student.

Ways to nurture a love of learning in children

Parents and teachers also shared with Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters ways to help children have a fun pre-primary school time, so that they are not surprised when entering first grade and are not pressured to take extra classes or study the first grade curriculum ahead of schedule.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Lan, a Vietnamese teacher for foreign students in Hoi An (Quang Nam), who travels across Vietnam by motorbike "taking books for a walk", said that she often applies many ways to make children enjoy playing with letters and numbers before forcing them to sit upright at the table and dictate an entire poem or paragraph.

For example, Ms. Bich Lan lets children play with puzzle cards. "What has short legs. But is webbed. Has a flat yellow beak. Often makes a quacking sound." Children will be very excited with the puzzle cards, with vivid colors and easy-to-read printed letters.

After letting 5-6 year old children answer the riddles, adults can show them how to recognize letters, tones, flat tones, falling tones, asking tones, heavy tones... Or with the word "con", adults ask how the word "con" is written, how it is spelled, then the children write those letters in their notebooks. "When children are familiar with letters, spelling and spelling, parents can read the riddles for the children to write in their notebooks, the child who writes the fastest will be rewarded... These forms of learning while playing, learning through playing like the above make children very excited and not bored", Ms. Bich Lan shared.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy, professional assistant at Hoang Gia Primary, Secondary and High School, District 7, Ho Chi Minh City, said that 5-6 year old children have a very good ability to memorize images. Children may not be able to write, but they can memorize images so they can remember the letters to read. That is the ability to memorize images.

Like other education experts, Ms. Thuy does not support teaching knowledge and content of first grade textbooks to preschool children.

However, according to Ms. Thuy, over time, children are introduced to letters and numbers in preschool, parents can equip their children with skills before they enter first grade such as: pen holding skills, handwriting, creating experiential activities for children to develop listening, speaking, reading skills...

"Every parent has silently taught their children to count forwards and backwards. At home, when children make mistakes, I often punish them by making them count. When they first learn to talk, I tell them to count from 1 to 3. When they are older and go to school, I punish them to count to hundreds and thousands. This is also a way to practice math skills for children," Ms. Thuy shared.
