In the days leading up to Lunar New Year, the price of gladiolus in Hiep An commune (Duc Trong district) - a key gladiolus growing area in Lam Dong province - is only about 35,000 VND/bunch. This price of gladiolus is only about half of the price of the 2023 Tet flower crop.
Currently, Hiep An commune has 180 hectares of gladiolus flowers for harvest to serve the 2024 Lunar New Year, with an output of about 20,000 branches/sao. Currently, gardeners are urgently harvesting to transport flowers to supply the Tet market nationwide.
The current price of gladiolus flowers ranges from 30,000 - 40,000 VND/bunch of 10 stems depending on the type of flower. Due to the impact of economic difficulties, this price is about 2,000 VND/branch lower than previous years.
However, in return, thanks to favorable weather conditions this year, with warm sunshine and little rain and storms, the irrigation system has been upgraded and invested in better than previous years, so farmers have achieved better productivity and flower quality.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Thoai - a flower grower in Dinh Anh village, Hiep An commune said that with 1,000m2, Mr. Thoai's family can grow about 25,000 gladiolus plants and harvest about 20,000 plants.
With the price of 30,000 - 40,000 VND/bunch, flower growers will earn about 7 million VND/sao after deducting all expenses.
Mr. Thoai explained that although the 2024 Tet flower crop will be a good one, the price is a bit low, and the price of fertilizer and labor is high. Therefore, flower growers will spend more on production costs.
Mr. Thoai also said that at this time in 2022 and 2023, the price of gladiolus flowers will be up to 60,000 VND/bunch, even up to 80,000-100,000 VND/bunch.
Many farmers said that this year, recognizing that the market has many fluctuations, flower growers have been more proactive in planting and harvesting in the hope that flower prices will remain stable and be sold out during this Tet holiday.
However, many types of flowers grown in Lam Dong are at low prices, and flower growers are anxiously waiting for prices to increase.
